Are those "rings" in the China filter loose or something? I say stick with AC Delco, Fram, Purolator or STP.

 

so is the China filter the latest version?? if so, looks like they're back to the silicon ADBV, which is a step up from the previous version that had nitrile. based on these photos it looks to me like the China filter is equal quality, with maybe even more filter media (looks tighter packed). but looks can be deceiving.

someone should cut open a china filter and see if it has cardboard endcaps like the POS frams...

Black?? I've Never seen a black oem nissan oil filter, I was a lube tech at a Nissan dealership and never saw a black oil filter.... pic's??!!

 

I used to be a lube tech and never saw one. Only filters we ever used were the 9E000 and 65F00.

 

I am doing my apprenticeship at nissan, and occasionaly in parts. I checked and got the parts guy to cehck the filters and we checked most of them are still made in japan. Didnt check all of them, because the rest were in boxes. I know all the ones i put on are still made in japan, but ill be sure to check, maybe the new ones are being made in china.

FWIW. the only 3 filters i use at work are 9 eddy (9E000), 65F00, and 55Y00( big blue one)

I still have 1ea Japan Manufactured filter left. Today I bought 4 new filters from my local stealership, Only after I got home I noticed that they are the Chinese made. I compared apples to apples. It seems as if the Chinese filters are heavier in weight and appear to have more filter media. In the pics above the Chinese filter has a rifled (spiral) stamped into the perferated metal. I didn't notice this on the ones I bought???

Some of the older SR20 oil filters were black and and the RB and 300zx came with light blue ones.

Infact, my friend is running the light blue one right now on the RB25 I built.

 

I just got one in from Dave B last week and it's a Japanese-built filter. Mine appears to be a few shades darker of a color and the lettering isn't quite so boldly red, but that could just be the picture.

Ok you change your oil filter maximum every 5000 KM it doesnt matter if its filtering a bit less or as bit more, its not on the engine long enough to cause any damage or anything at all. The fact that its made in china doesnt make it any less effective at what it does.

I agree with you that what i said was stupid, but the point i am trying to get across makes sense. I think that some people on here are over doing it and dont realize that these are not sports cars or race cars, its just another 4 door sedan thats good at some things and bad at others.

Some people take it too far, yes, but you're taking it too far in the other direction.

 

NO, we have not yet had anyone that I know of do a test of the used filters side by side. I think that doing that, as well as an oil analysis, woudl give us a better idea of the quality of the Chinease filters.

One thing that IS a concern is that the J filters were pretty consistent over the last few years. I run them on my QR25, and have run them on my VQ30DE and VQ30DEK. Since 2002, I have seen the J filters run consistent in terms of quality- meaning that in 5 years I have not seen a difference in them. The dozen Js that I have now are all the same.

We have, at least based on these pictures, seen differences in the C filters that are available and the C filter pictured, as well as a difference between the J fliter design and the C filter design.

Is this a problem? Most likely, no. But is it something that we might want to watch. If we start to see less filtering media, or less pass-through holes in the metal inner lining, or other QC differences, we may need to be aware that different lots of filters might have different quality properties.

As you said, with 3000-mile changes, it most likely is not a factor, but it IS something that we need to watch.

I run Synthetic oil for 5000-6000 miles between changes (I drive 100 highway miles per day, 5 days per week), so I still go through a lot of filters, btu if I were to find that these don't filter as well as my OEM Nissan J filters, I might need to adjust my oil change intervals, or go to a different filter altogether.

 

I generally avoid anything made in china. but to be honest & fair, I have never seen any difference in filter performance (as indicated by oil analysis) among any filter on the market - even mobil 1 vs. fram vs. made in mexico supertech --- I've studied many many UOAs with a mix of premium and cheap oil filters on a spectrum of engine types, and they all worked just fine. I myself used to run the $2 supertechs, and my UOAs were as good or better than with the 9E. why? because with modern engines they don't have to do much filtering to begin with, so long as the oil is changed on time. unless your engine is dirty/sludged, or you run the oil out until all the additives are depleted, the oil never gets dirty enough to even need filtration. and if the oil does get really dirty, it will just plug the filter media and the filter will quickly be in bypass mode anyway (where unfiltered oil is pumped through the engine).... so with a dirty engine you need to replace the filter much more often regardless of its quality.

a while back I read a report where some guy ran an engine for several oil change intervals without any filter at all. I wish I could find it now. he set up some kind of bypass rig to do it. he performed UOAs and compared them to reports from the same engine w/ an oil filter. there was no discernable difference in wear or insoluble material in the oil.

now I wouldn't call this conclusive proof, and i'm not advocating that we all ditch our oil filters, but I think this illustrates the point about expensive vs. cheap oil filters.

of course having said all this, I too spend the extra cash on the 9E.... never underestimate the power of psychology & peace of mind in consumerism. yup they got me.

related topic -- there is, however, a definite difference in air filter quality, as clearly shown by many UOAs. the OEM nissan oily paper design is the best on the market. many here will be surprised to know that the K&N filter is one of the worst -- it consistently results in high silicon and related high engine wear on many of the engines that run it. it simply lets too much dirt get through. oil gurus call this "dusting" your engine. some call it "sandblasting".
