Picked up Satellite Radio on Non-Satellite System...

So I'm sitting in a parking lot the other day listening to standard free air wave radio, and out of no where I hear static, then the station fades out, and I hear what seems to be Stern CLEAR AS DAY saying and I quote "that's some good bullsh*t"... No censoring at all, then the static sounds again and I am returned to the regular station that I was listening to. How is that possible? I have no kind of satellite radio in my car, just standard AM/FM/CD. I thought you needed special receivers and antennas for that satellite crap?

Maybe another car with satellite radio passed by and somehow shot the signal to my car? But I still don't have the receiver, so what gives?

Somebody using an FM transmitter/modulator for there Sirius could have been picked up by your car, I know thats one of the ways to install Sirius systems to stock car stereo

A lot of aftermarket sat radios have an FM modulator. Someone likely drove by with one and you happened to be on the station that they had the modulator set to.

Oh yeah... and satellite radio FTW! I have XM and love it.

I have sirius in my jeep and wife's van. I love it especially with the distances I drive. I no longer have to constantly search for channels.

Here's the deal. And it's THIS reason, primarily, why the FCC over the past year or so mandated to Sirius that they pretty much filter their antennas and power supplies. There have been a humongous amount of complaints that Stern and other "not-quite-family-friendly" satellite stations bleeding over to adjacent cars using FM transmitters to "shoot" the audio into their radios.

Anyone that has purchased a Sirius satellite radio system recently will probably note a rather obtrusive(sp) black "bump" near the end of the antenna wire and/or power wire where it plugs into the unit.

And it's a good bet that this "problem" was instrumental in the decision for XM and Sirius to announce a proposed merger.

Sorry for my rant - but since I work at a stereo shop that sells both XM and Sirius, we hear this complaint almost every day (not that it's much of a complaint - heck, you get free satellite radio for a brief moment).

I personally don't even like the FM transmitter anyways, I'd rather just hardwire it for the best possible sound quality.

and for this very reason i would amplify my fm modulated signal to blast cuss words for a 1/2 mile around!!! geesh people, can we complain about something else?!?!?! (not those on this board, but the FCC and such)

Mad dad keeps a CB radio in his truck for when he goes hunting. That way he can talkt o the other hunters in the lodge ect.. He has an AMP for it and can wind up takeing over damn near every station with it and with his conversations lol. You will hear truckers all the time saying stuff like "damn son what the hell you using? Better cut that thing off before they get your azz!!"

Why use a crappy tape Deck when you can just get a cd/mp3 with an aux jack? MUCH better sound and ease of use. Plus you don't sacrifice your cd/mp3 player in the process.
