auto tranny stuck in 3rd? wut cause?

Hey so i was on my way home tonight car runnin fine.. besides my passenger headlight low beam burning out.. but anyways merge onto a road car shifts to 2nd just fine i accelerate to speed everything is normal... come to red light ... turns green car has no accel wut so ever even if i put the pedal to the floor. So i manually put the shifter into "1" and still natta it was totally stuck in 3rd gear no matter what i did. so i pulled into the nearest gas station popped the hood checked fluid level and its fine. so i shut the car off let it sit for couple min then started it back up and everything was fine...?

has anybody had a similar experience? or know what might have caused this?

98 Max GLE Auto 134,000 KM had Tranny fluid flush in the fall. (synthetic fluid) ummm Ambient temp right now -19 Celcius car was warmed up to normal operating temp... had been driving around for a bit b4 this happened so if there are any other details that would help solve why this happened please let me know

and should i be worried?

ps i do know it jumps about 500 rpm between 2nd and 3rd under moderate to hard acceleration

it seems that we have another person that flushed a high-mileage tranny and is experiencing problems

Had a similar issue with my '96. But in my case the tranny wouln't shift past 2nd gear. After I restarted, all was fine, and is fine. Note that this issue came up after locking up the brakes and sliding for about 20 ft at an intersection avoiding an accident. The car didn't stall, but wouldn't shift past 2nd gear. This was last year. Like someone else mentioned, its a limp home mode in case of a tranny failure. Total km on the car is around 190K Km.

My transmission will do this when it's below 20 degrees outside and the car hasn't been properly warmed up. In my case, it's due to overcooling (trans cooler with no bypass).

Our cars do this when they notice "high amount of wheelspin" or "hard braking" It locks the tranny not sure maybe 2nd for a while then it kicks back in. Or you can do what you did and shut off then turn your car back on. This always happened to me during the winter. Look it up in your owners manual it'll tell you the whole deal.

The trasmission sets a trouble code after it get the wrong reading from a sensor 3? times. When you shut the car off the code resets till it encounters a problem again.I did a brake burn with mine let off the gas to quick and put it in limp mode it only happen that once.Don't worry about it unless it keeps doing it. The od light will flash to.

Pulling up the e-brake in snow and locking up the back wheels will shut the abs off and light up the abs light to.

happened to my 98 windstar like 2 weeks ago. Wouldn't go past 1st after i slowed down through the ez-pass....Drove it pretty hard that day.....shut off the engine, n started it back up. Everything went fine. But yes, its something to do with fail safe mode n you shouldn't worry about it...well..of course it starts to happen more often....did you change the tranny filter when you did the flush??
