quick question on struts.

i did my struts a few months ago and ever since ive heard something loose upfront. i torqued the 3 strut tower bolts and the two bolts on the bottem of the strut to spec but i never saw a torque spec for the bolt that holds the whole assembly together...so is there a spec for that bolt?/are you supposed to tighten it as tight as you can? because if i remember right i only tightened it a little past half way. thanks!

might be time to replace the stut bearings and mounts as well. I made the mistake of just replacing the struts... i have that knocking sound whenever i go over bumpy roads.

nope i didnt change the strut mounts. i used the old ones. seemed to be fine.

and 3d man, its not really so much of a knocking sound as it is rattling. it sounds like my strut and/or spring is loose and able to shake around a bit. but i only hear the 'rattling' once and a while..

and how tight is that bolt that holds the strut/spring assembly together supposed to be? as tight as i can get it?

chazmgee-its a snap. just need to rent spring compressors from autozone and have a set of sockets and maybe some pb blaster if the bolts are being stubborn.

no need to get a new strut mount. strut bearings wont knock (although they may sqeak) the pressure alone keeps it from being loose. same goes for the nut on top. how tight? I forget the exact measurement, but pretty much as tight as you can make it without breaking it. if you hear a knocking sound, you may have simply blown the strut. KYB's by any chance?

It's not that difficult to do. I should take you a couple of hours.

yep gr-2s. but i highly doubt i blew a strut. theyre only 3-4months old. and i dont drive like a jack@ss very often either, plus the roads are pretty smooth around here (well, not as good as they usually are when its not winter...but theyre not bad) so im pretty sure i didnt hit any pothole or anything to blow them out. ill try tightening those bolts some more and go for a drive and see if it helps! thanks man

EDIT: just went out to tighten them, and i couldnt. they are on there pretty solid. so i have no idea what could be causing the 'rattling' sound im hearing...hmmmm

3-4 months means nothing. and you dont have to drive like an ***. and gr-2's blow easily (which is why I asked if they were KYB's)

bounce the car and test them. check your sway bar linkage. there is nothing on the strut that will rattle unless you left some bolts so loose they can be turned by hand.

when i installed the AGX along with the KYB strut mounts after 2 months one of the mount when bad when i took out the strut the whole rubber inside the mount came off the metal so i was able to remove the strut while the metal part of the strut mount was still bolted to the car and it did make a knocking sound
