Transmission bearings?

Ive been recently experiencing a Whirrrrring noise while driving. You can only hear it when your in gear and it goes away when I shift into neutral. My mechanic says my transmission bearings need to be replaced. Anyone have any experience with this or replaced them before??? Tia!

It's basically what they do when you get your tranny rebuilt.

Plan on changing all the bearings. It can be done DIY but you'll need some pullers, dial indicator, and you'll want to re-shim the bearings. So it would take a while before you get your car back on the road.

Check the oil level in the tranny more often. Worn tranny bearings usually result in leakage of gear oil at the axles, and if you lose enough oil you'll cause the damage to get even more aggressive.

I check the oil level in the tranny I wanna say every other oil change. When I do, it has always been fine. The tranny shifts smooth but the noise is definetly there...

Then you are running on borrowed time.

If you plan to have this tranny rebuild, the sooner you do it the less likely it will have expensive damage. (In other words, now is more likely to be a bearings/seals rebuild, and later could involve a whole lot more)

MAKE SURE THE MECHANIC VERIFIES THE ENDPLAY OF THE DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER.

90% of the time the factory did not set it correctly, and if it's only a 2-3 day job it's highly unlikely these shims are in the plans.
