need some help

my car at idle runs like crap, it will idle at 700 rpms for a bit and then will dip down to 400-500 rpms if i hit the gas again it will go back up to 700 rpms for a bit and will dip down again, the last time it did it the engine light came on when the rpms droped but i have it parked for the winter so i haven't been able to take it to my shop to find out the what the engine code is but i will in a couple weeks if its still comes on my bataryt died so the engine light will reset
has any one else had this problem if so what did you do to fix it, any help would be great
thanks

Get the code. Other than that, check for vacuum leaks.
