Finally did my knock sensor

Wow. It took about 10 minutes and the improvement was instantaneous. I drove it 600 miles over the weekend and my mileage went from 20-21 on the highway to 25.7

If its a cali spec...its at major PITA...you need to remove the swirl valve and other emission crap from the 99s.

A 12mm socket, a long extension, a knuckle and ratchet. Also someone with smallish hands to finger tighten the new on going in. Not exactly painless as you will more than likely bugger your hands somewhat. Don't overtighten.

I just got my buddy to do mine as well today... I suspected that the KS was bad since I was getting crap low end power, and after he took it out, he called me and told me it was cracked! He replaced it and the car came back from vacation =)

Btw, there were no codes signaling that anything was wrong... I have no idea what will trigger a code if a cracked KS won't do the trick lol..

Is the knock sensor wire usually replaced with the KS?

The KS wire is not usually replaced unless you break it getting the sensor off, like I did. Not a big deal, my wire was brittle and I believe it was $15 to replace. After 100k miles, it needed replacing!!

One of the things about the knock sensor geing bad is it will throw a code but will not in itself cause the engine light to come on. Lost power and mileage will be an indicator to look for a code.

Yeah I am aware of the symptoms...and I have a new KS that I recently purchased. I was just wondering if it would be worth the $15 to replace the wire while I am at it.

It is pretty easy to check continuity. If it doesn't look damaged and checks out then I wouldn't replace it. On the other hand 15 bucks is pretty cheap and if it gives you peace of mind then go ahead...

Not to sound boring or anything, but after I replaced the KS on my 97 fuel comsumption improved by about 1 mpg, from 26-27 hwy to 27-28 hwy without AC at around 75mph.

Just did my knock sensor, it was fun!! Well I have small hands so it was easy. After I did a 5spd swap I got the knock sensor code I replaced it, well my old one was definitely out cause it was cracked.

Good luck to whom ever is changing theres.

that's funny. when I changed mine last summer my MPG went from about 30 on the highway with a bad KS, to about 30 with a good one.

If the light went off, you have other codes as well. Check to see what other codes are there first as the KS does not send signal to trip the light.

My light came on and the only thing we were told was it had to do with the knock sensor and something about bank 1.

Is bank 1 the area the KS is located or does this imply something else?

Go back and get the 4 numbers that the code reader got you. Bank 1 usually refers to an O2 sensor in the exhaust....could be any number of codes. That code is what set your SES light....NOT the KS code.
