Problem with A/C on 95 Max

I have a problem with Air conditioning on my 95 Max . Not sure, it use to work
fine, for past couple of years hasn't been working. I need help troubleshooting, instead taking to a mechanic and pay tons of money.

Does your defroster work? The AC and defrost are the same compressor (there aren't 2).

I have a 95 Maxima and have had to recharge the AC twice. The 2nd time was last June at which time they also put a dye in. If the R134a leaks out again, they can trace where the leak is.

I suspect you just need to recharge the R134a. For my money, I prefer to pay to get this done properly.

The defroster/air conditioner should be used periodically to ensure the seals don't dry out and the R134a escapes.

It could be your compressor or you might just need to recharge your AC. Its really simple to do, i did mine myself and it costs a fraction of what mechanics might charge you. Just pick up the AC recharge package at autozone or advance auto parts, it has everything you need.

1) confirm that the compressor clutch is engaging properly. turn the AC on - you should hear the clutch click as it engages, and the fans will kick on. now go have a look a the compressor to make sure the clutch disc is spinning in step with the pulley. if the disc is not spinning, then your clutch is not engaging.

2) if clutch is engaging, buy an AC pressure gauge and measure the high and low side pressure. compare to FSM specs (not the specs that come with the AC gauge). if both are low, a recharge is required. if you plan to keep the car more than 1 year get this done by a professional. if you just want to sell it this summer, go ahead and use a 134 recharge kit that has PAG oil mixed in with the freon. make sure it's PAG and not POE, and know that recharge kits are a temporary bandaid fix.

3) if clutch is not engaging the problem is either a broken clutch disc, excess clutch gap, or a faulty magnetic coil or coil circuit. All of these can be repaired without removing/replacing the entire compressor, but given the state of your AC system you'd be better off replacing the whole thing if you do indeed have clutch problems.
