How much did you spend on your 3.5 swap?

I think I'm the cheapest, quick run-down.......

2002 VQ35 w/40k= $450
Cam adaptors= $125
Aeromotive fpr= $125
Autometer liquid-filled fuel gauge, used= $25
Window switch= $125
Blown up VQ30DE spare w/auto trans= $65
Misc gaskets, seals, materials, etc.= $200

Total so far= $1115

Subtractions:
Sold coil-packs from spare motor- $65
Scrapped aluminum from both my engine and spare engine- $200
Scrapped platinum pre-cats from 3.5 - $75 (could have got more $$ on E-bay!)
Sold another coil, still have 5 left, not to mention tons of other spares- $20
Gave away vlsd auto trans to junk yard- nothing, but hook-up for life now!

Total= $755!!

Im sure wheels at tires were not required for you to pull off the swap, lol. Did they take place at the same time you did the swap? Im just thinkin of a reason why you included that there, thats all

And wow $200 for rod bolts? ARP #202-6006 I assume. When I was looking into it, I asked Justin at ImportCarPartsProP about it and he quoted me $142 shipped.

Not to bust your chops at all THT, Im just saying it to let others know of better prices if they are lookin into this thread in their process of concidering a 3.5 swap

That's what I had in mind with this thread, a resource so people could figure out an average price people are spending on everything needed for the swap ,as well as high/lows, and also ways to get stuff cheaper or make the swap more cost effective......

Anyone else?

I considered them essential because 225s on 17x7 wasn't going to hold the torque.

I ended up around $2,800. The motor was my single most expensive part. $1,000, but it only had 7,000 miles on it.

Not to hijack this thread, but where are you people finding these engines for so cheap. Where i live if you can even find one, the junk yards want 1000's of dollars for them, and that is if you can even find one(suprisingly hard, only ones i have found are on car-parts.com, and they all want >2500can for an engine).

One thing I do know about that is it has NOTHING to do with the price of a VQ35 swap.

vq35 w/ 4K - $540
Intake mani - $100
SSAC headers - $300
FPR - $43
Spec stg 2 - $295
New coils (just to be safe) - $120
Cam adapters - $47
UDP - $85
Water pump - $51
Gaskets and valve cover (the VC was no good) $164
Path TB - $90
VQ30 spare motor - $216 (to make the install quicker)
Flywheel resurfaced - $110
VAFC2 - $180

Total w/o adapters (which I will possibly make myself) - $2,341

have a spare 3.5TB as well as 3.5 LIM with injectors and fuel rail... possibly get back $150 - $200 for the above.. and sell the rest as scrap yard... possibly get $200. So in return getting back $400

$2,126 - 400 = $1,941....

why do you guys have different parts listed? I know maybe an engine someone bought needed something replaced that another one didn't.. but does anyone know the core parts needed to do this swap to a '99 5-speed?

The following is mandatory:

vq35 motor
stock 3.0 headers (free)
FPR - (price will vary depending on make)
Spec stg 2 - (upgraded clutch is recommended)
Cam adapters
Gaskets

I feel like I am missing something but can pinpoint it...

A way to control the VI is highly recommended as well. I sell pre-programed window switches for the 3.5 swap if anyone needs one they're $65 shipped

You have to call to get a accurate quote. Call as many places as you can and even those that don't list prices... its a hit or miss type of thing.

i saw it on car part. I was hunting on there for about a week, then I saw that listing. I call them, the price was as posted plus came with a full harness, and they were in florida, so shipping would be quick. I was fortunate

I've emailed a few times, but not always get a responce, calling is always the best way.

I know you're just trying to sell you product, but something to control the VI is not mandatory for the swap to run, as some people just run their cars with it at default full open, or simply gut it.

So I think you should note that if they want to keep the VI functional (lots of city driving, for the people that dont want to compromise midrange power for top end power), to buy your product, which is at an awesome price.

Well looks like I'm in luck... looks like I might be getting my vq35 after all, and to match it, a PF Throttle body... for roughly $400. Wish me luck... for I have to travel 6hrs to go pick it up.... oh well

That was the reason I went with a VQ35/Cams/3.0 timing chain & ECU - Its actually cheaper to build a VQ35 with cams using the old 3.0 ECU, than to get a Stock VQ35 with VTCs going. The pricing around here was anywhere from 600 to 900 for all the in-dash wiring. Without the ECU. So I bought aftermarket cams for 680$ and a 3.0 ECU for 50$ LOL

Ok... it looks like my 3.5 motor is just gonna be the bare block... no coils, no cover, nothing... what am I missing from the complete 3.5engine that I will need? everything else can be sourced from the 3.0 correct? Sorry but I want to get all down, so I dont have anymore down time, than already have.

bare block? with no heads? timing case? or you mean just the motor, no upper plenum, coils, throttle body, etc...

you'll need the full motor. throttle body (or pathy) 3.5 injectors, or Dek injectors, connectors for the injectors, fuel rail, the electrical connector for the VIAS (i never knew the technical term), upper plenum, oil cooler, etc....

hey, I came across that thread not to long ago, glad to see someone picked it up! the mileage on that thing makes it a good find. SOMEONE, not sure who, BUT SOMEONE on the .org is currently selling a 3.5 upper IM and some other stuff. But for the most part yes, everything Mdeezy listed, except the oil-cooler is still on that engine, but it looks like the camshaft position sensors have been removed, you don't use the 3.5 cp sensors on the swap BUT now you have a huge oil-leaking hole on each head that needs to be dealt with, might just be cheaper to have someone weld some aluminum over them while you have the heads off to check those valves out, ummmmm, get some better headgaskets and bolts as well. Anyways....STOP POST WHORING MY THREAD if you have any more questions start a new one pwetty pwease.

Motor: $600
Rod bolts: $200
Cams: $700
Walbro fuel pump: $100
Pathfinder TB: $200
Tilley's Cam Spacers/Adapters: $100
PF TB Adpater: $125
SARD AFPR: $85
Test Dummy Labor: $500
Tip for cheap labor:$150
Misc. Parts: $100

Total: $2,760

Additionally, we should only be including things that are necessary to swap a motor. Clutch and flywheels should not be included since this is not necessary to swap to a 3.5. Let's just focus on what you did motor wise....and not the drivetrain.

I think a clutch is necessary if you want to able to drive your car for more than 30k miles

Clutch job on a maxima takes an hour or two. So you can do the swap, get a real clutch and let it sit till you blow yours.

hummmm, I like how mforrest made that comment about including bare minimum only yet his price includes rod-bolts, cams, a walbro pump, pathfinder tb, not to mention test dummy labor, labor tip, (whatever the heck those are.......)

Please feel free to list whatever you personally feel like including in your price, as long as you have a price breakdown it is still helpful for those that are in the planning/contemplating stages.

1. Read the last sentence of the post....
2. Test dummy labor price was just the cost of the mechanic that did my swap. I guess you should include that since that is part of the cost of the swap. People charge about $1500 in labor for this but I paid $500 because I was the first that he ever attempted and know one else wanted to be a test subject.. Everyone else pays more now.

Do whateva...like I said...drivetrain is not part of a 3.5 swap. I used the same clutch I had in my car for two years and its perfectly fine.
