My car got hit and run. Please help.

Hello. My car was parked and got hit and run yesterday. A sheet of paper left on the front window (probably left by a witness who walked by) with the plate number. Then I called the police and they said this sheet of paper with the plate number won't mean anything. The cop said they can't do anything with just a sheet of paper. There were a lot of damages done to my 2 driver's side doors. Is there any way I can track down the driver with the plate number? Any suggestions? Thank you.

I believe I've run across a few random websites in the past where for a fee you can look up a driver by their number but I'm not sure of the legality of this method...try google I guess. Sorry to hear about your car.

Jon is right really the only thing you can do is try and get a look up on it but what can you do with that, besides revenge which will get you no where and possibly make you responsible for their vehicle, you might have to bite the bullet on this one and have you insurance cover it

we had this happen at the place where i use to work a while back in the parking lot, probably 5 times a month, and one out of the five times some one would witness it and they would tell us at the front desk, giving us their contact information along with the vehicle identification, thats pretty much the only way that it could be taken care of it.

submit a claim to insurance, pay the deductable, curse/spit/smash stuff and get over it.

I've had to do it twice in the last year. All I can say is I hope the people that take off like that get back what they did to me and you threefold.

It helps to know someone who works for your city/state. Police Office, Firefighter, Correctional Officer, etc...They all could look up the license plate for ya. Probably not legal but if you know the person then they probably won't give a rats ****.

Call back and tell the cops that you SAW it happen and TOOK DOWN the plate number. Then they can look it up, find the car, and see the damage.

If the car turns out to not be damaged, you just say "oops I took down the wrong number I guess"

So even if I said I saw it happened. I don't know the exact time, size or color of the car. I think the cop will find out that I'm lying or something. This is illegal ...

Pay to look them up, contact them and let them know that someone saw them hit you. Tell them that you'd like their insurance info, or you'll hand this over to the local pd. Let them know that you are trying to handle this between you two and insurance first. He won't know that you are bluffing and that the police won't do anything regarding it.

Or give this info to your insurance company and let them go after him.

I don't understand why they can't look up the plate and make a phone call? I mean, I can understand why they can't lauch an investigation, but for christ's sake they can't make a 5-minute phone call?
