Clutch Is *****'d

How can I tell if my clutch is bad? No matter what gear I am in my car is sluggish even though the rpms shoot up. Overall my car is really slow and the rpms are raising and i pretty much don't speed up. What are the symptoms of a bad clutch? I bought the car used about 4 months ago and I don't know if the clutch was ever done, it could of been, but the car has 130k miles on it.

sounds like your clutch is slipping because you say your rpms are raising but little movement. the maximas have a really long lasting clutch. now before everyone flames me for it, a long lasting meaning that if you dont beat on it then most likely it will last longer than the people who beat on it day to day. i have seen a 99 SE with a stock clutch with 160k on it and when it was finally replaced it still looked better than clutches that came out of a 70k car. i mean it all depends on the driver(s). in your case you got a fair amount of life out of it if it is original. how many owners prior to you? did a young kid own it before you?

off topic: have you ever noticed that when you buy a car that has been modded that you have 1000x more problems that you would from buying it stock from an adult? im not saying it applies to every situation either.

Exactly the same problem I had two years ago with my car of 130K mls. Your clutch is dead and you you need a new one. Don't drive your car around since your car will eventually not move at all.

A buddy of mine had his replaced on an 86 Camaro for $700 parts and labor. Not sure of a Maxima, but I am sure its somewhere in that price range

yo a clutch job to me sounds like its going to be pretty pricey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i think ill go with the 5th gen clutch

my dad test drove my car a couple minutes ago and he said when you give it gas (happens the most in 4th gen) the rpms shoot up and the car doesn't react. the rpms go down and then the car moves a little.

I was charged like $700 including everything two years ago. That was expensive but I had no options to go to other shops since my car barely moved.

id seriously look into doing the clutch yourself. the clutch is 140$ here at the nearest autozone. that comes with a new throw out bearing, alignment tool, pressure plate and pilot bearing/bushing. The project is pretty simple. just takes a while. with 2 people id say first time would take 6 hours.

i don't want to mess anything up if i do it. i know i probably could do it though and i got a Haynes manual i will look through that. i will have to get my flywheel resurfaced too.

That's called slipping.

Get a few quotes. I can change a clutch myself for under $200, but there is several hours of labor that needs to be added in as well. So if you don't DIY it's going to cost a lot more than that.

this guy i know can do it for $500-$550 with clutch included. He will be using a Luk clutch. are those any good? I would do it myself but i hear it's a really long process. I might have him put in a 00-01 clutch.

$138 for an exedy 5th gen, $175 labor, add another $45 if your flywheel is toast......

car moving slow, but RPMs shooting up

Hi
i had similar problem.
Sometime back i had rattle noise with my exhaust, i took to a minakee repair shop , he said he will also diagnose the car, he teared the bearings cover and told me there is no grease in it and I ended up replacing the front bearing , but not with Minakee.
since then i had my car moving hard, some time it even doesnt move to the ratio of the gas peddle i press . Had the mechanic loosen any thing related to clutch? if so what and where i have to tighten it.

Before it use to be fast and very quiet with a pickup like rebel, I can clearly see the difference, but my rpms are shooting up and there is a noise in the car when i give gas, cos rpms are high and car is not going forward in that ratio.
how to trouble shoot this issue and fix it?
I live in long island and new to the car.
I have Nissan maxima 1998 SE . Pls need some advice on how to troubleshoot this issue.

Recently i purchased ELM327 , i am collecting the data, but i dont have the ability to analyze it . If some one want to take a look at the engine data, I can post the data, i have it in excel.

Thanks

Maybe he beat on your car and wasted the clutch, maybe your clutch was just ready to go anyways, maybe he sprayed oil on it, who knows! But it is possible he adjusted the clutch pedal so that it would slip, then when you pay him tons of money to pull the tranny and replace the clutch he will just re-adjust the pedal. ummmm, you clearly lack some very basic car knowledge though, I'd recommend buying a haynes or chilton, it will tell you how to check the clutch adjustment and also how to replace your clutch, which by now is probably fuxzord anyways.

I would suggest 5th gen clutch. I've read around, it's the one of the good one to replace your stock clutch. 0.02

I've heard good things about the 5th gen clutch. I purchased an exedy oem replacement clutch off ebay for ~120 and its great. Just make sure you get an authentic exedy clutch. Also, stay away from nissans key value clutch kit, a complete waste of money.

thanks for the replies everyone! im getting my clutch done for $550...

i heard about those key value clutches being not good.

i have decided i dont care what clutch i put in my car as long as i get some type of warranty because the car is only 4000 bucks. im not going 348 mph in it down the street so i don't need a specific clutch. i used to care but now i dont it's an old car and i want a G35

I noticed in this few months it sometime it worked like before and some time not.

last saturday, i had squel sound from passenger side, i went to tilden mechanic, he said i need to replace front rotors, passenger side axle and front caliper's and finally he replaced back passenger side caliper and made bill for 981

is it the right amount for this job.

i have to go through the files i downloaded regarding clutch.
Does any one lives in long island, just need moral assistance/help in repairs.
i am still thinking of looking into clutch. first i will read from those documents

one good thing i did successfully is pull out my bose stereo and put it back,
