Check engine light on...on vacation..PLEASE HELP ME!
Update!
I got 0707-rear O2 sensor and then 0304 which is the knock sensor. Would have bad gas triggered the knock sensor? I have 1000 miles to drive can I go without replacing these now and wait till I am home? If not, can I go into Nissan and tell them to replace those parts, or do I need to have them do the diagnosis too? I reset the ECU and they didn't come back...could have something just farted in the system? I am not that concerned about the O2's but the knock sensor concerns me.
Where is the knock sensor in the engine bay!? I wish I wasn't on vacation right now...damn it!

no no.. o2 sensor codes are usually followed by knock sensor code..
its your rear o2 sensor.. which is usually the problem with the cat.. does it smell? the cat maybe bad or just the sensor...
its not mission critical so you don't have to worry about changing it right away..
let me go see if lazy bill wrote it up in the 4g forum

woah.. and they said bill doesn't nothing around here

DTC 0707
Diagnostic Trouble Code 0707 points to a problem with the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor. This sensor is mounted in the exhaust stream, just downstream of the Three-Way Catalytic Converter. When the two Front Heated Oxygen Sensors are operating properly the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor is not used for engine control operation. It is used to monitor the condition of the Catalytic Converter. If either (or both) Front Sensors fail, the Engine Control Module uses the signal from the Rear Sensor to maintain a correct fuel/air mixture.
DTC 0707 is detected when the Engine Control Module determines that the response time of the Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor is excessive. The possible causes include ...
- Harness or connectors (the sensor circuit is open or shorted.)
- Rear Heated Oxygen Sensor
- Fuel pressure
- Fuel injectors
- Intake air leaks
Please check the condition of the wiring and connector at the rear Oxygen Sensor. If they look okay, you ought to replace the sensor. If you had a problem with fuel mixture I think you would have other DTCs in addition to 0707.
Your Maxima has three Oxygen Sensors. Two are front sensors, mounted in
the Y-pipe between the exhaust manifolds and the Catalytic Converter. One
is a rear sensor, mounted in the exhaust pipe downstream of the Cat.
When both front Oxygen Sensors are operating normally the rear sensor serves only to keep tabs on the Catalytic Converter. That's the reason your engine is running well. The Engine Control Module (the computer) is not using the signal from the rear sensor to control engine management functions.

For specific information about replacing Oxygen Sensors on your Maxima see
the Chilton manual (page 4-13) or the Haynes manual (page 6-14).

ok
Thanks for the replys. I am asking you this now. I have to drive about 5 hours in the morning. I am thinking about driving it to my vacation spot. If the light goes back of should I take it in when I get there. Or should I reset it and worry about it when I get home. I am just a little nervous. I am in a town I don't know and a long way from home with car problems.
Again, where is this knock sensor in the engine bay. I hope its not the one I see burried between the two banks of cylinders...that looks tough to replace! Anyway, would bad gas have caused this by any chance? I went and topped off the tank with 93 octane with the thought that maybe the knock sensor was set off by that?
No the cat doesn't stink that I know off...maybe it does and I don't know about it though.
I need good solid suggestions to ease my mind and to be able to enjoy my vacation!
Please
Thanks,
SHUMAX

Yup, you can drive home with it on, but you might as well reset it and see if it goes away. The rear sensor will not degrade performance like a signal from the front ones will, so you won't have to go home in limp home mode.
bad front ones make you limp huh? hmmm...
well back to the subject..
don't worry about the knock sensor code.. once you fix the O2 sensor that one will go away also..

I can't believe the main players here with 4th gens aren't aware of those stickies......there's some good info in there....
Nothing about NOS though......
