I found my CV boots are in bad condition and need replacing. I'm tired... do those split CV boots work at all? If not, what kind of gear oil is reccomended for our cars? It's a '95 cali spec if that makes any difference. I know gl4, but of what viscosity?

 

You're going to need new boots at the very least. Do you hear any clicking? any other sounds? I was gonna do mine, but I found a mechanic that put new axles and everything in for a total of $320. Call around. I think there are a couple places in wallingford or ballard that you could get it done for that cheap.

 

How long have they been torn for? Do you hear clicking around turns?

If you don't know how long they've been in this condition, I'd much rather just replace the entire axle, you can get reman axles for about ~$50-60 + core. The joints could fail even after you put boots on them (BTW - split boots == crap).

I believe you want 75w90, but don't quote me on that.

 

got to agree which side is bad? if its the driver side do it youreself its a 30 min job with hand tools however that passenger side id take to a shop but always remeber this always buy youre parts first then bring your car to a shop to have it installed you save so much more money

 

Both sides, there's no clicking and I'm going to do the job myself. It'd save a lot of time if I could just use those split CV boots they sell, but if you're sure they're crap.

 

They are crap.

If you want to save time, just buy Raxles.com remanufactured axles. Screwing with boots is a serious waste of life, I know from experience.
