Oil Additives... Restore
Oil Additives... Restore
Hello Maximers,
I know theres very opinionated sides on oil additives, some raving about how great they are and other pissing about how it blew up their engine.
My Max has close to 200k miles on it and like any car with that many miles, compression is pretty bad.
I tested mine today and they are all around 120psi. Very slight oil seapage.
Obviously I dont want to redo my piston rings... I would like to try out the Resotore brand oil additive.
Has anybody had any luck using it? Some people say that it is too thick, causing the oil passages to close and starve parts of oil... I can only imagine that they put it in on a cold engine and it wasnt running, making the additive clump rather than blend with your oil.

120psi all accross? if so then its most likely not ur rings. See if your head gaskets are blown. if not then try autorx. it is a proven oil additive that actually cleans out the sludge slowly...so it doesnt damage anything.
is auto RX same thing as an engine flush ?
i have a bottle of some kinda Engine Flush stuff in the garage from a buddy of mine who used to work for an oil change place.
directions say to put entire contents of bottle into the crank case and run for 5 minutes at low rpm (ie slighly higher then idle - like drive around a parking lot for 5 minutes ) then change the oil. is this same ?

No its not the same.
Go to www.auto-rx.com and also go to the Additives forum of www.bobistheoilguy.com
AutoRX has solved many a leaking problem before. At 200K you will need to run 2 applications for it to help. This will take about 7,000 miles.
The product is available only through the company and is not sold in stores.

I'm currently doing about 250miles on Auto-RX. It's too early to see any benefits (obviously) I've had a valve cover leak fixed, and it turns out that i also have the timing chain cover leaking. Hopefully it'll take care of that as well clean out my dirty engine.

here's the oil report from my friend's Saab after the quickie lube place used an engine flush on his car. they let it idle with the engine flush, drained it, and put fresh mobil 1 in. 3.5k miles later we pulled the sample -- almost 10x the normal bearing wear -- and keep in mind this sample is diluted compared to what was in there during the flushing procedure. if we had sampled the "flush oil" I'll bet we would've found far more metal.
the quickie lube place told him his engine was sludged, b/c all Saab's sludge, and needed the flush. in fact, only the 4cyl Saab is a sludger. this is the V6, and is clean inside...
Wow thanks for the heads up, look at the amount of increased copper, iron, and molybdenum. those are more than 50% increases.
So why did someone create this stuff. damn people just want to make money...
Thank you so much

the moly is an oil additive, and M1 has lots of it. but it's also a coating on some pistons/cylinders. so it's hard to tell if there's moly wear or not.
the real shockers here are copper and lead. these are bearing babbitt metals, and are way off the charts in this report.
basically, the engine flush just cut 50k miles off the life of this engine. one or two more of these flushes and this car would spin a bearing for sure.

Oil analysis can be alarming, but can be misleading sometimes too.
My question is: was the flush fluid used by the quickie lube perfectly clean? I imagine that stuff needs to be replaced periodically, and if they were flushing with dirty stuff then they may have *added* dirt to the oil passages. So it could be soft metal from someone else's bearings.

I've never heard of reusing engine flushing fluids. how would you separate it from the old oil, and why would anyone do that?

no place i have ever seen or heard recirculated old fluid on the spot.
some places do sell reformulated engine oil, basically they send out their collected motor oil that they drained from ur car and other cars mixed together and some factory filters it and sells it back to them at a reduced cost. i know several small mechanics do this here in toronto but i would never bring my max there, i used to get my oil changed there on my old neon.
engine flushes and other additives are always sold in those little bottles. when the lube place sells u the SERVICE they just put a bottle of whatever in the engine and run it and then change the oil

The in-car injector cleanings are pretty good, I've heard. Much better than the in-tank stuff. But for injector issues nothing beats a good ultrasonic cleaning and testing.
