I am in the market of a nice GPS unit. No more than $500.00

Yes, i know i could get a DVD player that has GPS, MP3 and a bottle opener.... But all I need at the moment is a GPS unit.

Any suggestions welcomed.

I have a cell phone with a GPS receiver built in and subscribe to TeleNav service. Works quite well and allows me to have navigation capabilities in any vehicle I drive (most of the week I'm in my company vehicle).

The site is www.telenav.net. They have service for most major wireless carriers, depending on what kind of phone you have.

You might be cheaper to upgrade your phone to one that has a GPS feature.

get a garmin nuvie. You will absolutely love it. There is not a single thing wrong with it.

 

I have a TomTom One and haven't had a single issue with it. It's very helpfull and extremely easy to use. Great unit.

i have a mio 310x. bought it on black friday for $200 brand new. it runs winCE and you can hack it to boot into native winCE to play videos (DIVX and XVID as well as MPG) and run any wince 4.2 apps. the memory is also expandible with an SD card. i currently have a 4GB card in it with a bunch of simpsons episodes and mp3's. that way i can watch a show while waiting in traffic or waiting to pick someone up.

as a nav it's on par with all the Garmins i've ever used or seen and the map colors/design is much better. the only downside is that the maps are 2005, but most garmin units you buy today, unless they are the newest nuvi's, are also 2005 or 2006 maps.

it's smaller than all but the latest nuvi's and has a larger screen than any garmin. all in all i've been VERY happy with it.

the only other downside I can think of is that it's not as user friendly as the Garmin. if you have any experience with any GUIs or electronics, though, it'll take you all of 5 minutes to master it. it also doesn't have a subscription traffic service available.

and since it runs wince, if you were so inclined, you could install TomTom on it, too.

I have a Mio i picked up at circuit city over black friday. 400 dollar unit for 150 bucks. got touch screen, came with car charger, wall charger, and has internal battery that lasts about 4 hours. accurate to about 3 feet. i took it on several trips already and it works like a charm. would deff recommend it. i would probably spend 400 on it now after knowing how great this thing is.

i've used the tomtom 910 and magelon roadmate, both are nice tomtom has really easy interface and lots of extras like bluetooth, so you can make and recieve phone calls with it and it has 20 gig hard drive, you can play music and store pictures which is pretty cool because the windshield mount has fm transmitter so you can use your car speakers

I've heard nothing but good for Mios for the price. I was looking at either getting me or the wife one. Plus these things can get stolen unless you put them out of site when not in the car, that's one reason I would get an inexpensive one.

If you have used the navigation feature on that phone, you would know that for the free function it is basic and sucks. They want you to upgrade and pay them.

 

Garmin. I got a nuvie last week, never looked back. They are the brand to get when it comes to GPS.

 

I've been using a Garmin for five months and it's great.

At my circuit city, we make fun of the Mio GPS. The Roadshop guys always tell me "That's not a GPS, that's a Mio!" if I give them an Open Box one (of which we get a lot... no idea how many times I've seen a MTU C220 returned, but it's a lot)

 

tom tom 910 if u want gadgets and 16 gig worth of mp3s tom tom one if u want the basics. nuvi 350 if u want the same as the tom tom one but want mp3s on a sd card and an audio output so u can run it into the radio.

 

I also got a Mio at Circuit City for less than $200 and it works great!

 

i got a magellan 4040 from costco. Its cheaper than amazon.com
399 + tax. comes with 4.3" screen. works great.

the nuvi 660 is $200 more. I was about to get nuvi 350 but the bigger screen is a nice touch.

I use a Garmin Streetpilot 2610 hardwired into the car.

 

I have a Garmin StreetPilot c330 and I love it, so easy to use and understand. I do believe, though, that it is more dangerous for some people to have a GPS than pulling out the map while driving. Whenever my mom is using the GPS she tries to literally follow every direction it gives her even if there are no roads to follow. This got us into a bunch of steel wiring in a parking garage in our rental car a couple weeks ago. My aunt also flew off the freeway in her H2 (yeah don't worry, i gave her enough crap for it, now she's at least got a Denali) because she was trying to understand her navigation. Bottom line is I don't let the women in my family touch mine, it's dangerous to them.

My garmin also came with outdated maps, and there are no USB drivers that I can find for Vista so I'm screwed.

 

Most of these GPS mfgs use TELE ATLAS for their Map information. So my advice is to go with the least expensive unit. Some units will "say" the street name that you need to turn on...that's cool. If you can get your hands on the MIO 310X Digiwalker...they were selling last year on US Thanksgiving at Staples for $150....plus it plays MP3's although not the greatest player and when you use both at the same time it's a real power hog...just stick with the GPS.... http://www.miogps.com/US/. Easy to use...real cool and comes with all the accessories plus they do the map updates every 6 months...fully USB compatible. They use the same mapping software from TELE ATLAS as all the big names like Garmin etc...

 

I have a 310 S MIO which is the Canadian equivalent to a 310 X...where do you get information to hack this to play these videos please?

Recently bought my wife a Garmin Nuvi 660 in June at Costco for $500. They had a $150 special online. Absolutely fantastic. We've used it while travelling in TN and NV as well as at home in CA. She will use the navigation and hands free bluetooth in her Maxima at home.

 

I have a 2003 maxima gle and i want to kno if there is a double din space in there

 

I use a Navman ICN 530. Works great and paid around $320 for it last year.

 

I would go with Nuvi 350...............

 

I have a Nuvi 660. My brother has a Nuvi 350. You can't go wrong with either of them IMO.
I've used my 660 extensively since I bought it in Nov. '06 and overall its been great. It was money well spent as far as I'm concerned.

 

i used to have a tomtom go300..their very first model they came out with..that thing was pretty sweet...too easy to use and it navigated very nicely. so if their old first model was awesome, than i can only imagine their new ones are even better.

 

Used a Garmin touch screen at lunch today. I was pretty impressed and I'm going to look into one also.
