New Road Noise

After rotating my tires I now have a road noise. It sounds like tire noise but not sure. I rotated the tires before but don’t remember this issue. I rotated per the manual (front to back and vice versa keeping the tires on the same side of the car). The noise is always there. It just changes frequency with the speed of the car.

While rotating I also changed the antifreeze. The only reason I mention that is because I removed the black plastic shroud that’s on the passenger side of the car and covers the coolant, windshield washer, etc area. It’s a good size piece of plastic. I have not reinstalled that plastic piece and wonder if that could cause the road/tire noise.

The car handles fine. No steering wheel pull or vibration.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this load bothersome noise?

How many miles on the tires? Are all four tires the same (manufacturer, model, age)? If the tires are RS-As, did you inspect them for cracks? Any signs of uneven wear or cupping? Do the tires that are now on the front have more or less tread than the tires that are on the back? Is the tire pressure correct? I’m not suggesting that you waste your time, but as a test, you can always rotate the tires again to determine of the noise disappears (or moves to the back).

If you are worried, take the car to a tire dealer. Worn or faulty tires can lead to accidents. Be safe. Good luck.

Thanks MDS

All 4 tires are original at 33000 miles. They are RS-A’s. I can’t see difference in wear or cracks but then again, I need to inspect much more closely. I’ll double check pressure but had it at 33psi but that was a couple weeks ago.

MDS isn't kidding, those RS-A's are not very good tires at all. They do create a lot of road noise. I have ridden in a car with them, and compared to my SL, those tires are loud.

Please check the inside, sidewalls also. I agree with MDS, be careful!

Well it was cracked tires. I was about to re-rotate the tires and see if the noise went away. The first RSA I removed was okay. But the second tire had 3 large splits on the inside sideway. The largest one had to be 2.5"-3" long.

Let's all thank Goodyear together for manufacturing such a fine product! It's only something we entrust our lives to every time we drive. For Pete's sake, a three inch crack is practically a small ****. It is unbelievable. Good catch Bill. Stay safe

I'm not sure the cracks will cause noise though. might be worth taking them in to be balanced too. might have lost a wheel weight.

and if you've got a fair amount of tread left, get those things to a goodyear shop and they'll give you at least 50% of the value of them towards new tires..

Just don't rotate tires. I have had many mechanics recommending this and I haven't done it for about 5 years.

The nice thing is you don't have to buy 4 tires at once, they're expensive anyway.

Bad Idea. For the best handling, you want the tread on all 4 tires to be as close to the same as possible. I rotate my tires myself every 7,500 miles and there are many who rotate at 5 K miles.

If you don't rotate, the front tires will wear much faster than the rear. The difference in tread depth that results is not safe. If you don't have a problem before you replace the 2 front tires, there could be problems when you have new tires on the front and old tires on the back. Besides, you don't want to buy 2 more RSAs -- and you don't want different tires front to back, either. Bottom line -- there are good reasons to rotate your tires. And all 4 will need to be replaced at the same time -- with 4 tires that are better than RSAs.
