Do exhausts/mufflers get old?

I've noticed that my Greddy SP1 (8 years old) on my 98 recently has gotten a lot louder. There are no leaks whatsoever on the pipes, or the can itself. Just wondering does a muffler or resonators get worn out over time?

Maybe you're just getting sick of it.

Maybe the glasspacks inside the muffler are wearing out?

Glass pack muffler gets louder the older they get. The "glass" stuffing rots away.

If you wash the car right after driving it and get cold water in the glass pack muffler it can ruin the packing and cause it to be louder even if not too old.

if you drive them on super short trips the condensation collects inside and rusts them out

its really not that hard, but definately get someone with some experience to guide you along.

It's not hard at all. Have fun with the PB Blaster and rust.

I know I've seen muffler tips with a resonated lining, maybe those would help.

Exhaust welds break and crack. Also the baffles inside go out. Take your muffler off and inspect it, you never know. I had a slight crack where the pipe connects to the muffler and I wondered why it seemed louder and only noticed it after i took it off and inspected it. Also you can shake your muffler and hear if the baffles broke. If stuff rattles you know its shot. My friend Greddy SP sounded like it had all sorts of stuff broken in there. LOLz.

i took mine to a shop to get welded when my greddy evo pipe cracked right between the muffler and the bpipe
one of the guys at the shop told me i probably dont have too much life with the exhaust anyway...maybe 6 months tops..i did notice that the exhaust was getting louder than before
i think itll just keep getting louder
im looking on changing mine too
but i dont know whether to change the whole catback or just the muffler?

Muffler do wear out. Usually from the inside out.

If the noise is just louder, it could be the innards of the muffler rusting out or burning out. But see if you can tell if the noise is coming from a new PLACE too. I've had to replace the flexpipe (wire mesh thing that connects the exhaust manifold to the rest of the exhaust system) two times on my '91 SE.

Actually, this last time was kinda funny. I started the car on a cold morning in February and got out to scrape the frost of the windshield and noticed more exhaust was coming from under the driver than was coming out the tailpipe! Not good for many reasons!
