Turbo or 3.5 swap?

Hello,

A friend and I decided to do a project car this summer and make it ridiculously fast. Our goal is is to beat them snotty WRX's so that will take about a 4.5 0-60 and a 13.0 Q/M.

We havent purchased a car yet but we are looking at a 1995-1997 Maxima SE manual.

The cost of the car will prolly be in the 2k - 3k range (we may take a blown or high mileage if we do the 3.5 swap).

What is the cost and HP gains from a 3.5 swap? Is it intensly difficult and require a lot of custom fabrication? Id like to avoid a lot of metal work. If I do the 3.5, can I also add a PF TB and still see gains?

What is the cost of a turbo plate for the maxima? I just need the plate, I can get turbos really cheap. What sort of gains will a turbo give me? Looking at the stock max, fitting in a turbo looks like it would be a *****!

Any input will be appreciated!

The 95 GXE is the most simplistic...and the lightest 4th gen Maxima. IMO I would do a 3.5 swap and turbo/supercharge that sucker. This is only if you have the funds for both...but that would be an amazingly fast car.

I have read through them but I have not found numbers of actual results nor personal experiences and track times of them installed.

Ill scan through them again but still, nothing beats actually talking with somebody who has done it.

Tuned 3.5 with modest mods (I/E/cams) should get you high 12s for "cheap"

I was really tempted to do so, I figured the 3.5 engine would run 1,200 and 2,000 with a tranny (please correct me if wrong)

Then ill get better clutch (300)
Lighter flywheel (200ish)
Sports springs (not figured)
Wheels (500)

And that alone will be about 5,000, adding a turbo will be at least another 1000. I can get turbos for about 200 bucks new, so the rest is exhaust work and other things needed to do one.

How much do cams run? I havent found any out there for maxes, I was looking at one for my own max, but found nothing but stockers.

If I do the 3.5, PF TB mod, flywheel and cams, I can only imagine it being FAST AS ****!

That would be spendy, but still easily obtainable.

Substitute wheels for something else more performance oriented.

My setup is:

3.5 ($700)
ebay knockoff S1 cams ($700) <- any VQ35 cams will work...too much lift and you'll need aftermarket valvetrain components
ARP rod bolts ($200)
Exedy Stage 1 ($200)
Fidanza flywheel ($300)
UR UDP ($150)
PF TB ($175)
Rev-Up oil pump ($200)
Secret Sauce IM ($0...friend hooked me up)

"Cheap," reliable power.

Next up will be an EU with wideband and the Quaife that's sitting in my garage.

thanks THT, where did you score the 3.5 for 700 bucks? Thats quite the steal.

Looking at the stickies adjusting the TPS to work on the 3.5 TB looks challenging, is it easier if you just have the PF TB?

THT, do you have any track times?

No track times yet but 96sleeper had a very similar setup and ran 12.6 on slicks

Thanks Nmex, thats quite the deal, i always thought it would run well into the 1's.

Thanks too THT. If I could run 12's Id be pretty thrilled. Id almost be afraid to drive it, thats in the realm of scary fast.

It's a thrill to drive, especially on the highway. The car has enough pull to hit 120 pretty fast

Bumper to bumper traffic sucks a bit more though. The PF TB makes the car pretty touchy/responsive.

Haha I bet, Im really excited to get it rolling. We first need to find a 1995-1997 Max. IF anybody has one to sell in the Northern regions I would be interested in getting it.

I forgot to add this to the price... a radar detector

is that what it is!! man i couldnt figure out why the hell my throttle response was like it is...i thought thats just how manual cars are or something (did a 5 speed and 3.5 swap).
How do you like the single stage IM? i'm thinking about doing it myself but can't decide if its worth it.

Can't really say since I never drove the car without it. From what I hear, it smooths out the upper end of the powerband.
