Check the single black wired connector at the coolant temp sensor. Could be loose.

There are causes for this that aren't cluster related. In my case, changing out the cluster solved my problem. The old one probably just needed some solder, but they are only about $10 at the boneyard so I took the easy way out.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=522594 i had a similar problem. Opening up the throttle caused enough vibration from the engine to wiggle the connector's metal tab loose... which meant it contacted at times but not at others. I went to a JY, got another temp sender, problem solved.

for VG owners with this problem (unless the VE part is the same as well): if possible pull one of an '89. The design is more durable IMO, than the one that was OE on my '90.

Mine started to do this as well recently. Mine will just drop all the way down. I think it's an air bubble though because it seems to change with elevation. I live at sea level and when ever I drive out to my grandparents house it's like it drops at the same spot every time I go there.

mine is definitely gauge related and not due to the sensor on the engine.. is there anyway i can fix the solders on the gauge itself? is there a how to?

Most likely it's the contact from wiring to the coolant sensor itself: when I had this trouble I tried to disconnect the socket and the wire broke off. No, I didn't pull the wire, it was just corroded that bad. I haven't replaced the connector yet - just cleaned the end of the wire and placed it in the little hole in the middle of the sensor plate. I don't recommend to do it as a permamnent fix of course.
