i race my maxima a lot now. its an auto and i usally just drive normal and shift too. this is when i shiffft. 1st at 20mph then 2nd at 40mph then the d for the rest. i was wondering how high can u take the 1st gear.(mph, revs) then 2nd. etc. when i want to hit the gas hard and race its in d and the rpms go from 2000 to 5500rpms. can i do the same to 1st and 2nd ot will this effect my tranny. the book says not to go in first over 20 and 2nd in 40. can i go faster? so i can hold my gears in longer. i know the 5th gens are capablle of doing this. can we? thanks B

I tihnk it's been proven that almost 100% of the time it's best just to leave the car in 'D' and let it do it's own thing. Your car can go about 40 MPH max in 1st gear. The car will bounce off it's rev limiter around 40. The car will shift itself at 34-35 I think. Running it too high gets you out of the power band.

RE: Automatic Shifting...

You should just leave your car in Drive. It will shift as well as you can and won't ruin the engine as manually shifting from 1st to 2nd to 3rd will. After all, those gears are not there for manual shifting and not meant to be switched in and out of frequently. Check your manual - those gears are for different weather conditions - not a form of stickshift. Just trying to help .

True. BTW, 1st is good for about 35 and your can get all the way to 80 in second. You are shifting WAY too early. Just leave it in drive.
