Diagnose sound clip ?

Problem started back in April when I had my snows taken off (a/s put on rims.. need to get winter rims..). Whirring/humming sound from the wheels. Been having a hard time isolating which wheel, seems to be coming from the front though.

80% sure its a bad bearing, but I guess I'm hoping it's not. Partly confused as I've taken jacked up the car and tried to wiggle the wheel: haven't gotten any play in any of the tires. Noise doesn't get particularly worse when turning, in fact road noise usually overshadows the hum at lower speeds.

It's the only noise in the background aside from engine, wind noise. Almost kinda sounds like an exhaust, but it's not of course.

this taken with camera hanging in passenger side leg area. Noise seems to be a bit louder...

I suppose I'll start calling around for bearing prices, would like to be fairly sure about what it is though.. thoughts?

What would have to be wrong with the tire to cause the noise? I had tried rotating the FR and RL tires - noise did not change. I've been assuming its the FR tire, but perhaps I'm wrong.. I'll rotate the other tires later today, see if that changes anything.

What would be wrong with the tire for it to be considered "bad" ?

Several things can go wrong with tires, like scalloping/feathering of the tread/cupping tread/alternate lug wear/etc..

Here's a link to some probable causes of the above conditons..

http://www.kaltire.com/commercial/me.../tire_wear.php

Look at the pictures/explanations of the abnormal wear conditions, then check your tires for similar wear patterns..

If none of the tire wear conditions are found on your tires, then it may very well be a bad bearing...It may also be a transmission issue...

Sounds like a bearing to me, but I could be wrong. My friends acura started to make that noise, and it just gets worse, and worse, and worse. It was to the point of when i was in the car, sitting next to him, we had to scream at eachother just to hear ourselves talking.

thanks for the link. I've checked my tires, didn't notice anything obviously wrong, but I will check again. How many miles before one would start to notice this kind of wear?

Tranny issue? well I can hope it's not that... =/

how long did it take for the bearing to reach that point?

Miles really have nothing to do with the issues stated on the website, usually it's worn suspension parts that cause the issues stated in my second post, like worn struts/out of alignment/worn control arm bushings/etc.

It may also be the tires themselves/i.e. defective tire/tires..

It took approx 3 weeks to get Really, Really bad, but then again he hates his car and beats the crap out of it. I'm sure if you take care of your car and dont beat it, it'd probably last a little longer. Plus, he also does a lot of highway driving, coupled with winding mountain roads, so I'm sure that puts a hell of a lot of strain on the bearings as well.

hmm.. this sound has been around since April. I think it's gotten worse since then, but not really by a whole lot.. not sure if that changes anything. I'm starting to get freaked out to drive any good distance. Would rather something bad not happen...
