What Transmission Do I Have?
What Transmission Do I Have?
2004 SL with no gate shifter.
I have always thought this to be the auto 4, however car and driver says:
"In case it doesn't, the six-speed in our 3.5SE test car can be swapped for a four-speed Jatco automatic with a manual shift mode at the same trim level, or even for a five-speed Aisin automatic in the more-luxury-oriented 3.5SL model. These largely negate issues with torque steer and throttle response."
Does this mean I have the 5 speed Auto in the SL? Did they make both for both trims?
How the hell do you find this out?
And if it is the auto 4, how much slower does it compare? Is the speed negligible? It sure feels fast to me...(I had given up a Cavalier for it though...

You have a 4AT. Yes, you're not as quick as the 5AT when speed goes above 60 or 70MPH, but you may have better MPG since you actually have an OD gear. The earlier built '04 came w/ 4AT. I'm not sure when in '04, but Nissan dropped the 4AT and put the 5AT in both SE and SL.
IMO, that would be nil (small % difference).
Truth is, yes the 4AT has an OD, vs the 5AT, which does not. Speaking by definition an OD is an gear ratio less than 1.000. In the case of the A34, OD or no, the gear ratios are what ultimately determine highway mileage.
The 4AT in the A34 will be revving a little higher vs the 5AT due to its gear ratios.
The FD for the 4AT is 3.7899, and the 5AT is 2.44.
Here's a thread w/ a few links in it. (4AT vs 5AT)

You listed 5AT at 2420 @ 75; it's not that low, more like 2750-ish @ 75, and 3000@ 80, stock tires @ 34psi cold. I wish it's 2420 @ 75, then it would be below 3k @ 100; then we won't need a 6th gear.

And yes, I agree with RHMAX, when I am at 80mph, then I am roughly around 3,000 RPM

I'm saying we don't need a 6th if 100 was at or below 3k RPM. As it stands now, a 6th gear will give us better MPG.

OT. but i figure I would ask you.
I have the 6sp Manual. When my motor is going to come out, I will be putting in a new clutch, flywheel, LSD and.......this is where I ask for your expertise.
The 6th gear I only use on the highway..... is there a way to change its ratio to lower my 6th gear highway cruising rpms to lets say 2200-2500 at 80mph?
Thanks for your help, I figure mind as well ask around here before I get pooched by whatever shop does the install for me.
I wish there was a thread about what parts the 6th Gen needs for a new clutch, flywheel, LSD, gear ratios etc..

But, if you're asking if the 4AT is the same, then yes, it is. Mechanically the FD changed in 2000. The code also changed in 04 IIRC.
FSM. So, what exactly are you asking, and why?

When I bought my SE back in September of '03, I remember reading the window sticket of an SL with a 4 speed. As I recall, both in-town mileage estimates were 20 MPG but the SE with the 5AT was estimated at 28 MPG on the highway at the SL with the 4AT was at 27 MPG on the highway.
So, if these estimates are correct, the 5AT gives slightly better MPG.
