Maximum Tire width/height...no this is not starting the fight over 'rim sizes' again!

Does anyone have any figures on what the maximum tire section width and overall height is for the 17" SE/AE?

I am referring to potential rubbing in the wheelwell, etc...

NOT to what is safe and what is not as far as the whole rim size fight goes!!!

Specifically I am entertaining the idea of Dunlop SP Sport A2's in 235/55 17 98H. While maybe not a razor sharp as a 50 series or lower, my only concern is that they are .8" wider in section width and a whopping 1.7" wider in tread width than stock. They are also 1.2" higher than the RE92's.

Thanks!

Why would you want to put the widest width tire you can on a 7" rim? At some point, the gains from the wider tires do not outweigh the bigger size/weight of the tire.

I suggest you use this link to determine what tires sizes keep the overall diameter of the tire as close to the oem diameter as possible.

IMHO. A 225/235 is about as wide as I would go on the factory maxima 7" rim.

I am not going with the widest I can...

I simply want to know what boundaries there are for mounting tires of various sizes.

I indicated a 235 tire above and actually the rim sizes allowed (according to Tire Rack) are 6.5"-8.5". Well within specs now famous from the 7" 'controversy'.

The SP A2's simply had a good price, one helluva treadwear number...420 (even though I know this varies greatly between manufacturers, it beats the heck out of our stock 160). I am also not concerned with giving up some cornering for longer life, better traction, lower cost and maybe as a benfit, a slightly more comfortable ride.

Before you go any further, I urge you to take a look at the web site Jeff92se provided. I think you're forgetting something.

Two things....

1. Which one are you referring to...the miata tire calc site?

2. If your concern and what I have overlooked is a speedo calibration, I can live with that. Over the years I have had an '88 5.0 Mustang with off size tires, and actally still have a '97 Ram with taller/wider than stock. I have gotten rather good at programming my own head to take into account a recalibration on the fly. A couple of days in any car and I know which side of the 'real' MPH the needle should be on.

Thanks!
