Stock valve springs + aftermarket cams

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread....28#post5666828

Any way we can calculate how high I can safely rev a stock engine with just nismo (10.82 mm lift) cams? I'm well aware that the stock VQ35 can take 7200 with stock cams/valve springs but what about the limit with 10.8 mm lift and stock valve springs?

I was only planning on taking it to 7000 with stock valve springs but what about 7200?

7500 is actually past the limit of the stock valve springs. I now think I hear valve float at that rpm so I rarely rev that high.

With aftermarket cams you really should just use better springs and retainers.

That wasn't the first, and won't be the last. :sigh:

Glad to see you saw the light. The HR's can't be beat for the price can they.

I could estimate that for you pretty closely, but I don't have time to do another engine model right now, it took me a couple weeks off and on measuring up stuff to do the one I just finished on mine..

Gotta agree with Matt just get the HR's if you're concerned and double shim (call DaveB and you'll see just how cheap they are).

Just keep linking that thread.. maybe in about a year or so people will start to say "hey I should do this!" just like the bigger MAF is catching on now... lol

Hey maybe I can get everyone with an EU to just pull the MAF out altogether and save the cash...

Kidding. I wouldn't actually recommend that for most, although it worked flawlessly for me.

Yeah it took me four years to get the MAF to catch on, the HR spring swap is moving a little faster.

Don't forget the extra shims. To make them more effective you need the 2mm shim base.

oh yes.
I feel kind of bad for the aftermarket guys though; JWT, BC, Nismo, Ferrea and Supertech, all asking an arm and a leg for their parts, and the stockers are just as good or better and way way cheaper. Oh well, good for us!

Ferrea and supertech have their place, no doubt. But yea, JWT, BC, nismo, are kind of rendered obsolete by this HR spring/retainer thing.
