97 SE with issues - 5-spd
I am looking at needing my 3rd 5spd transmission. I had 1 put in a year ago and the input bearing or other bearings are shot. I have tons of noise coming from the trans with the clutch out. It is also a new 5th gen clutch and new flywheel. My questions are:
1) best place to get a 5spd trans with some decent warranty?
2) How long for 1 guy to lay under the vehicle and pop out the old and pop in a new?
3) Special tools needed?
Thanks. I just finished placing in a heli-coil to cylinder 5 that had a stripped spark plug thread. Not the most fun job as I found it a bit nerve-wracking. Works well now though. I appreciate the trans help. Peace: e3

no special tools really needed to take out and put in the trans.
I dropped the trans, fixed the trans, put the trans back in the car in one day.
I rather fix the 5spd trans than find another one, and have the same problem again 1 year later.
For you it might take more than a day to fix the trans, but you need to get all the bearing replaced and while you are at it replace the oil channels. for fixing the trans you need special tools.

I'm local to you and have rebuilt several 5-speed trannsmissions, the last one about 2 months ago was for an .org member, so the prices are still pretty fresh in my head...........
Labor for a basic rebuild which includes all new bearings & seals, properly shimmed mainshaft, input shaft, and dif. bearings: $225
Labor for trannsmission removal/install: $200, add $40 for flywheel resurfacing if you are not installing a fidanza etc, no additional charge on any clutch/flywheel labor.
Parts: $279 for all bearings and seals, $35 for napa gl-4 (or you are more than welcome to supply me with amsoil or redline full synthetic (see group deal forum)
If you are crunching 3rd (or any other gear for that matter) it will be a little extra for both labor and parts, since it involves a little bit more work.
