Muffler installation cost?

Is $100-$120 too much to install a dynomax muffler and tip?

Seems excessive. Shouldn't be more than 40$.

You could probably get a new muffler and have it installed for that price. Welding hangers isn't bad at all, so I wouldn't pay them that much to do it.

100-120 installed is good if the price included the muffler.

Otherwise just welding i think $50 in MOST areas is fair.

Cost me just $110 to get a custom 2.5" catback bent up (crush) and welded, along with putting on a muffler I supplied (Dynomax Super Turbo). ~$150 in total.

I paid 80 and they included a flange and made the muffler a complete bolt-on rear section.

Was this at a local shop or a major franchise?

Local shop in TN. Great little place though, when Midas wanted $70/hr + any oxyacetylene used, they offered to torch out my cat studs for ~$20.

I had a catback done on my Formula with a flowmaster muffler and it has some crazy bending in it and I paid $200 for install and muffler... While we're on the subject... I just got my Max and am wanting a muffler. What are the best ones? Nice sound! No ricer crap...

paid $30 cash and NO RECIEPT.. but i already had a reducing coupler welded on my new 2.5" muffler, all he had to do was measure ithe pipe before cutting, cut, and put that new one on with a new clamp....and 2 new hangers. and took my old one back with me just in case if this decides to poop on me...

Stuba, i've been looking around for the past few weeks and i settled with a Magnaflow. Get street series for a nice agressive sound, or go big like me and get the race series and get a very loud, probably illegal, head turning sound. No ricer sounds, but when its installed in a week or so i'll put up clips because i dont recall anyone ever trying the race series on a max.

100 may be a bit high but sounds right. in my experience with mechanics, sometimes its worth paying a little extra if you know they are skilled. and an exhaust is not something you want to have a problem with.

I think 80-100 is about right. My mechanic(actually a motorcycle builder) is doing my whole setup, y, cat, and muffler for 200 so 100 for muffler alone sounds about right, for a reputable place. Generally i'm willing to pay more if i know the job will be done by someone a little more skilled on the welder.

is it really involved to change the muffler yourself?

That all depends, do you have a MIG welder and actually know how to use it well? Im just learning to MIG so i wasnt about to risk a $400 exhaust just to be cheap.

if you even have to question it, dont do the exhaust yourself. welding is just about one of the most difficult things to do properly. if you weld too much its too thin and bends or breaks or just collapses or if you weld too little then its weak and doesnt do the job. this is something you should leave to a pro, and im not even talking about midas, the muffler experts (unless you know they are good people).

i had a 97 accord that i bought to midas for a full exhaust replacement from the manifold on down. i watched this troglodyte go through FOUR (4) exhaust systems before welding it the right way. its a good thing i was standing there watching him, who knows what the hell he coulda tried to pawn off on me. start to finish took close to 5 hours....for a 40 minute job.
