Well today my front lip was.....

Well I was getting some things done at a local garage and after they brought my max into the garage they came in and asked me where I got my front lip....I was thinking ohh so you like it??? I tell them Ionic (it is a CF lip) and they are like well we broke it when we put it on the lift....I was like WTF.

So I go into the bay and look at it....it was snapped on the inside of both fog holes and there was a piece missing.....We go back into the lounge area and they go and look up the cost of a new one. The guy is a little perturbed that the lip was 350 but he said they will buy and new on and install it....I was like alright.

After about 20 minutes the guy comes back in and asked me to come look at the lip again....I go in again and he points out a part that was damaged and pulled the crack open and guess what.....................THE F BOMB LIP IS FIBERGLASS WITH A CF STICKER ON IT.....That is what really pissed me off about the whole thing......Thats what us maxima guys get......

Alright Im gonna stop the rant.....
EDIT* the lip is not fiberglass with a cf sticker...it is a fg/cf weave. I didnt know how to describe it when I wrote the thread....

Its a fiberglass and CF weave, I damaged mine and was highly pissed but it managed to stay in tact. Good luck getting another one as I believe jose is really slow with getting things done.

I was mad but I calmed down after it happened b.c I trust this shop and they right away said they were going to replace it, so that diffused me a lot.

The main part about the lip I am mad about is that NOWHERE, that I can find, on Ionics website does it say these are a fiberglass/CF mix ....A buddy of mine had jose make a couple things for him years ago for a 300 that were supposed to be full CF but came as fiberglass with a CF sticker on the outside....

The only reason I am getting another instead of a Stillen lip is bc the shop wont pay for the Stillen to be painted....

It also fell apart after I took it out of the car...I will get some pics later and post them....

Wow that's pretty shady. Considering what ionic charges, you should be getting true CF.

I was thinking of getting one, since my current stillen lip is cracked, but after hearing this, I'll be taking my business elsewhere.

Hey man why dont you email the PICS to someone in charge at Ionics ? see what they say, tell them they dont advertise ANY kind of CF mix

i'd be interested to know how they respond, but you have to be professional and not rant on them you know, so they take you seriously.

oh and its a good shop if they admitted the mistake and will pay to fix it, but i guess there is no way for them to escape this and they know it too...

Your really lucky that the shop is going to replace your lip. A friend of mine took his talon to a shop around here to get some coilovers installed and when the mechanic was removing the rear brake drum off, he broke it. Needless to say, my friend was on the hook for that one. The mechanic was using a hammer on the drum to get it off and CRACK. The shops up here have a "we break it, you pay to replace it" policy.

Needless to say, I try to do my own work whenever possible.

First of all, its not a sticker. Its an actual layer of weaved CF layed over the FG frame. Why would you assume it was a full CF item at the price it is sold at? Did you not ever look at it when you received it? Hoods/trunks and any other CF items offered to the aftermarket scene are created the same way. Costs for items that are made up of entire CF would be too great to justify the limited sales. Jose has mentioned many times on the ORG about the cf lip/kits being created this way and has mentioned how fragile they are, so have I. Im on my second lip as well after hitting a piece of retread that flew into my lane shattering my lip and also damaging my bumper.
Second your a tard for taking your car to a shop to be worked on without removing the lip/kit. Even if it was Poly if your car is lowered theres no way its getting on a lift with some sort of damage. Sounds to me like they were using a ramp type lift instead of a 4point lift. If the lip bumps into anything either going up or down, it will shatter.
You should have already known shops arent going to apply the care to the vehicle that you do.

I always figured parts wouldn't be full cf since it costs so much...

G/l with your decision.
It is more flexible because its poly, but that doesnt mean the paint wont flex and crack when you bump or flex the poly lip which is still going to require a repaint if you want to keep it looking nice.
Ionic also makes a FRP lip that is just as flexible and durable.

Bottom line is with a kit you have to be super carefull with it, whether its FG or Poly if you wish for it to looks as nice as it did when you first put it on.

well i wouldn't really take it off going to a shop but i would look at the type of lift. the ramp only is the only way it will damage the front lip. The 4 post lift will always damage the side skirts but the ramp will not. You gotta look at what your getting done and tell the advisor this and ask for what happens when you break my stuff

TO ALL FORUM MEMEBRS: This is a BS post. Our Carbon Fiber lips are Carbon Fiber, and the backing is fiberglass. IT'S NOT A STICKER.

This is how 99% of ALL CF parts are made. There is nothing wrong with using fiberglass as a reinforcement. Everything that we use is the best as far as materials are concerned. The CF that we use is 100% CF, not 50% Carbon Fiber and 50% black fiberglass like many other shops are using without having their customers know about it. The clear gel coats that we use are the same type that they use on 500K dollar speed boats, our resins are in the same class.

We have been selling these lips for years now and it's incredible that someone would post something like this. This guy is either totally clueless or is trying to damage our reputation.

mazzivart: I would really appreciate if you would clarify this to everyone. Take a VERY good look at the lip, post pictures if you like, but don't go on a public forum and make false statements.

Its a layer of CF, a very thin layer with FG used to support it.All hoods are made that way, ive had two and they were the same way. This is why they are so flimsy. An all CF hood would be a solid hood,no single layer and no FG frame. The weave would be extremly tight and you woulnt be able to see through it. It would be solid but still very light.
The CF parts made by Ionic and everyone else also use a layerof CF, but in order to keep the parts firm they are backed by a FG layer.

Ok well I have taken this up with Ionic on PM....when i wrote the thread I was pissed and tired. I miss spoke saying it was a sticker....that was the only thing I could think of at the time to descibe it....It seems to top layer is CF with a fiberglass backing as stated....It was just a little shocking to see fiberglass sticking through the crack.

If anyone says I was trying to discredit Ionic they are completley and underly wrong....I am a fan of Ionic esspecially since this community has so few aftermarket supporters as is....

i would never take my car to a shop that wouldnt be responsible it they broke my front lip or damaged anything on my car. and you should always informed the shop that the car is low and they have to be careful of the front kit. i would never buy a part fiberglass lip way to delicate. it does look nice though but i have the stillen lip poly and sometimes you cant avoid scrapping it even when being careful.
