Hi. Today I noticed an odd sound when I was driving. It is a clicking noise. The sound varies with the RPM. The higher the RPM the more it clicks. At first I thought it was something hitting the belts. I looked under the engine and did not see anything loose around the belt are, or any area. I'm stumped as to what the problem could be. Could someone help me out.

Can u get us an audio clip of the sound? It would be easier. It could really be anything engine related...

 

Its your injectors mine are loud as hell because i run nothing but 93 and sometimes 100. I am pretty sure if you threw a rod you would know. But that sound is normal.

VQrebuild96: Are you sure it's the injectors? I have never heard this noise before. I run nothing but 93. I hope it is the injectors so nothing is broke.

 

drain you oil ,check for metal debris. sounds like the bearings to me they tick when there on the way out and if you keep driving on a spun bearing your crankshaft will need replacing as well

 

lol, there are many things it could be. The first one that jumps into my mind on a vq is the timing chain tensioner. Rod bearings highly possible also. But that sound is NOT normal. Oil condition? mileage on car? and on the audio clip. Automotive s***hescope's come in handy at times like these. Very first step though is to rule out any of the accessories/belt issues. Remove power steering and serpentine belt, start the car and see if it's still there.

 

If only it were that easy to remove the betls. The tensioner pully nut is stripped. The car has 135K and about 2500 on the oil. I'm out of town right now, which really sucks if my car breaks down. I will change the oil when I get back in town, Thursday.

What could I do about the nut being stripped? Other than replacing the whole assembly.

About the clip, I will get one today if I can find a USB cable here.

It sounds like if you put baseball cards on a bike. That clicking noise.

 

NOOOO im not asking you to change your oil---------drain the oil into a clean pan and LOOK for metal specs or debris. If the oil is good you can dump it back into the motor you just need to inspect your oil is what im saying. IMO i would do this with urgency if the bearing finally comes apart, your in for big trouble internally.

 

If it is a rod bearing it will eventually spin, and the tick will get 100X worse and your crank will need machine work, rod might need to be replaced, etc. So I have to agree with the last post.

As for the tensioner....... Good luck getting at the bottom two bolts to remove the entire assembly, it probably won't happen. Vis grips clamped down as tight as possible FTMFW, if that doesn't work (which it should) then some cutting will be required . You will probably need to replace part of the tensionor anyways as I can almost guarantee you that when you start to turn the long adjusting nut that the threaded rod will snap instantly.
