just a little note to those thinkin about doing this, do it!!! i only paid 8.48 for all tires and it feels a little smoother . the thing with nitrogen is that it does'nt allow dampness inside the tire because its a dry gas. so, the tires stay at a constant psi without fluctuating up and down with the hot and cold as air will. plus, its gonna save you a little on the gas economy because you only have to check psi once every 4 months instead of once a month.

I heard that Costco now fill tires with nitrogen.

 

i heard about nitrogen, but never really thought it would do much, air seems to work just fine.

 

air if you want water in your tires, and fluctuating psi numbers. thats what nitogen brings to the table, stability. c'mon, cant afford a few dollars for future gas savings??? smoother ride too,you'll feel it, i did.

 

A Vette mag just did a big write up, and a regular "K" bottle holds 2250 psi more than enough for lots of tires, I will be doing it soon, Especially when I get the Fiskes on my Camaro,

 

I got nitrogen in my tires when i got new wheels, just because it was only 2.15 a tire. And they will refill and check your tire pressure for life FREE. Couldnt resist that.

cj's tires, any tire specialty shop, some dealers do it but will rape you for 25.00 for the service. i also paid only 8.48 for all four and i really feel a diiference. i aint the end all to tire maintenence but its a start.

Did you even check your tire pressure before they pumped it with nitrogen? I'm just wondering if your tire was low already and they just basically filled it up to proper tire pressure level.

 

the machine they use cost 8,000 from what i'm told, so i don't know if its a diy job. and, my tires where fine, but i did notice that the psi was going up and down and it felt like my car was straining a little more. so i put the nitrogen in and it feels a bit smoother for it.

 

Air is nearly 80% nitrogen so I see no point of wasting money on pure nitrogen. The other elements in air seep out of your tires I am told so the more air you will up the more nitrogen that stays in the tires...

 

thats a good point.and if your tires are properly sealed you shouldnt loose any air. i check my tire pressure every once in a while and its always the same.

My buddy's parents have nitrogen in both their Hyundai's (sonata and tucson), Dad says the sonata gained over 3 mpg with it and the tucson gained 2-3 mpg. I would of been a skeptic but he never told his wife about what he did and she was all sorts of excited that all of a sudden she was getting better millage.

 

its actually only about 70 to 75% nitrogen, and a good valve cap tightened down properly will eliminate any major seepage. and you can top off the tires with air, so you don't have to rush back and put more nitrogen in every time. and, to each his own. there's always a skeptic out there.

Anyways, I don't see why I would want to pay to have my tires filled... Tire pressure, low or high, barely affects my mpg and ride quality.

But if I can get it for free I will try it

Not that I have anything against using nitrogen, but don't tires start out full of atmospheric air before the nitrogen bottle is ever hooked up? Wouldn't you have to somehow pull a vacuum on a tire assembly then fill with nitrogen in order to even come close to achieving a 100% nitrogen fill?

That is right. Air is already 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen. Oxygen is an oxidizer so it is better to reduce the amount of oxygen in the tire. The point is just to reduce oxygen, so there is no need to pull a vacuum.

Sea level atmospheric pressure is about 14 PSI. So at 28 PSI, the amount of gas in the tire is just double by weight.

I think the tire mounter would use nitrogen to mount the tire. So air would be effectively purged.

 

we ve got a huge nitrogen tank up in the plant i work at... i think i ll use that tank, but will probably have to make some custom line .. but i think by the end of this week.... payin $10-20 is worth it..i ll have a free supply of nitrogen till iam workin there...

 

What I understand,you fill the tire and then purge it, and then fill it again, this process removes the air in the tire so Nitrogen will displace the air,

 

i would consider when i buy new tires but not worth the hassle with my existing mismatched , bald, unevenly faded from a bad coilover setup, 3x plugged crappy club tires. did i mention the 3-4 times they were brought back to life with fix-a-flat (my wheels dont shake at all on the highway, nope)

 

kinda like driving a washing maching on spin cycle with a really big blanket in it

Costco only uses nitrogen. I bought my tires there and I have been very happy with the nitrogen. Dont worry about going outside in the morning and seeing my tires are low. Also very helpful with low profile tires. My tire pressures dont fluctuate. Also if u need a topoff costco fills them free.

as i was talking to a friend of mine about this nitrogen tire "hooplah" (havent heard the word in while, vocab use is important), he mentioned that 3 of his tires had slow/medium rate leaks about 5-6 psi every week, he wasnt in the position for buying new tires and was told by costco that by replacing the compressed air for nitrogen may slow or even stop the leaks. he had it done a few months ago and ever since the tires havent lost any pressure to date. just some usefull info imo for those of you with slow leaks that dont want to tire slim/fix-a-flat (make you tires unbalanced as all hell). i would do this to solve my leak problem since i cant afford new tires but i already did it via tire slime and i can say, not the smoothest riding fix for the problem.

smart a$$, you can't see a difference. i just posted a pic of my car for the heck of it. you can however feel a difference cause the tires stay at a constant 32 psi. so the car gets up a little faster when you step on it cause they're always at 32.......

 

Yeah nitrogen is definently the way to go, unless you just want to use the free air provided at gas stations..

Nitrogen is widely used in industry to reduce oxidation and keep low temperature (liquid form). It is now making it to consumer application. Only downside is that it take energy to make it. Air is already 70% nitrogen.
