gas smell

first of all, i have a '96 se auto. i've been having this gas smell problem for a long time. i just can't figure out what is wrong. i would get this gas smell after i drive the car and especially after i fill up. i don't have the smell when i first start up though. it's usually after i've been driving for awhile. i'm not exactly sure where the smell is coming from. i already checked the engine bay, it's not coming from there. seem to be coming from either under the car or the exhaust end. could it be the fuel pump? if it's the fuel pump, shouldn't i smell the gas from inside the car? i couldn't smell anything from within the car, just outside the car. i checked the hoses and they seem fine. i replaced a few things in the engine bay and underneath the car like the charcoal canister, some sensors, and anything can be linked to the fuel system. could it be the cat or muffler? i'm running on the stock exhaust system. whole system is original, never replaced with newer stock parts. i don't have any cel though. ideas?

Check your gas fume cannister part of emissions system. I had same problem on my 96 I30 and I couldn't find the problem.

I removed the cannister and plugged the lines and went back to gas tank and connected the fume exhaust line to a cannister made with 3" pvc pipe. I added charcoal to the cannister and put a spark free bilge fan in line and since then NO gas smell problems. I know this sounds like a drastic fix but that gas smell drove me crazy for a year. By the way, when my computer is scanned no codes show .

any other ideas? if not, i'm going to have to bring the car to the dealer and let them check it out. hope it's something minor and not going to cost me a whole lot to fix.
