Want to find out which brand is good and what kind of bad/good experience others had with them. Will the brake pads wear out the disc more quickly than OEM pads or metallic pads/semi-metallic? This will be for an Acura 2000 TL and maybe my own Maxima. I am not exactly sure what they use on the car from Acura factory. Also please list where I can buy them locally (MA) or on the net. Thanks in advance.

Ken, some comments and a warning -->

Do NOT buy EBC brake pads for a 99 or 2000 Acura TL (and good luck installing rotors....you'll get to purchase an air gun if you want to do that)

Here's why:

<A HREF="https://maxima.org/forums/showthread.phtml?threadid=2119>My sad story</A>

For your TL, I would go to <A HREF="http://www.acura-tl.com/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi?action=intro>acura-tl.com</A> or <A HREF="http://honda-acura.net/cgi-bin/forumdisplay.cgi?action=topics&forum=TL&number=10& DaysPrune=2&LastLogin=">honda-acura.net</A> for pad recommendations. Most likely, I'm betting the Axxis Metalmasters or Porterfields will win that discussion. I can also tell you that Metalmasters have less dusting, and Porterfields have more. But, Porterfields stop better....

Anyway, I can also tell you that these sites warn about problems on EBC pads for Accords (which the 98-2000 models SHOULD have the same ones needed on the TL, but the EBCs don't fit on the TL), with wheel lockups, etc. I would just steer away from them on a TL.

As for the Maxima, here's another one of my "soapbox" posts:

<A HREF="https://maxima.org/forums/showthread.phtml?threadid=3552">Another story</A>

I hope this helps.....

Hmm...high performance or OEM replacements. HP -> I would go with Porterfield Street Compound. I think it's called RS4 or R4S. OEM replacement. Just get Bendix from your local parts store. I have Axxis and they are ok.

bendix iq are good and won't fade when heated,
but will generate a lot of brake dust. bendix
also provides life time warranty so you'll be
covered for the lift of the car. oem has no
brake dust, but it fades.

bendix pads

About 5000 miles ago, I had some bendix pads put in --it was prett cheap with labor it was about 90 for the front and 90 for the back...in general how are bendix pads--would anyone know?

here is what I know--LOTS of DUST...my rims are pretty dirty after a week...and it isn't from the city streets of NY...mostly brake dusts. And the other thing is that they make things squeak and squeak...actually they are better of the late...but whewww...sometimes in the holland tunnel when I brake...I feel ashamed

any thoughts on bendix pads in general?

thanks

I'm running Axxis pads on both the Z and Max. I just installed a set front/rear on my mom's Accord. She like's them so far, but she likes the PIAA Superwhites that I put in for her last week more LOL

No, these pads are not harsh on the rotors. I get 50% less brake dust w/ the Axxis. I would have to wash the wheels every 250 miles because the dust was soooo bad w/ the stock pads. Now, I can go 500-600 miles w/o cleaning them. They bite MUCh better than the ****ty stock pads.

Only thing you can do is apply PBC grease onto the shim backing and pad pins.

Stay away from the Bendix IQ pads unless you feel like cleaning your wheels all the time. They work AWESOME, but the brake dust is outta control.

Another thing to consider. I believe for the Bendix and the EBC, they only make the fronts. But I think they may make fronts and backs for the Porterfields and the Axxis pads. Not sure. I'm running the EBCs and stock pads (32k miles) in the back. And I think the car dives more than it did before under slightly hard braking. I think if I had pads of the same compound in the back as the front. It would result in a more neutral braking. Or maybe I just need some new springs and struts. Either way. I would feel better if I had a whole set of performance pads rather than just the front.

So, was the question ever answered? Which brand of brake pads out there that are brake dust free? I have the OEM brake pads, and the brake dust is driving me nuts! I hate to always have to clean my rims. Any brand of brake pads out there that can eliminate this?

There is no such thing as a dust free... minimal dust maybe. If you think OEM is bad... then more aftermarket performance you'll hate. You could try your luck on a set of Axxis Metal Masters. I use them and like them a lot.

changing brake pads

I was just curious about two things...how often should brake pads be change(I know--when they need to be)-- but usually how many miles do they last...and the other thing I was wondering if this is true--that for 2-3 sets of front pads changed, one set of the rear would need to be changed...

by the way, has anyone purchased OEM brake pads from Courtesy? they haev them for 56 for the front--is that a SET (both the passenger and driver side) or just one side?

thanks...

Well, it honestly depends... my OEM pads have lasted a good 50K miles. They need to be changed soon. As for rear pads... my CRX are still on their OEM pads... and it's been almost 10 years.

most pricing for pads should be a pair... But you know, you can get axxis metal maters for a little less than OEM. I'd get those if I were you.

Re: Re: changing brake pads

Gotta agree with Shing.. the metal masters are pretty good with the dust control. OEM pads can last as long as 150k. My CFO here has that on his '95 Max and has yet to touch the brakes.

Just about any aftermarket shop can get them for you. http://www.optauto.com is always a good place to visit.

Go with Axxis/PBR Deluxe pads and not the Metal Masters. I had horrible problems with Metal Masters and the Skyline brakes. The Metal Masters like to be heated up before they start braking. Braking performance was worse than stock when cold and at low speeds. At low speeds I got a strange grinding noise and there was a significant amount of brake dust. I swapped to Axxis Deluxe pads and they were a huge improvement. They braked just as well at high speeds, but were also excellent at low speeds and when cold. They have no noticable brake dust and are completely quiet.

I like them so much, I swapped them on the CRX and saw braking distances drop by about a third. A week ago I swapped pads on the new Miata and again went with the Axxis Deluxe pads. I am still braking them in, so I haven't pressed too hard on them. But, I can saw my right leg is a lot less fatigued in traffic. The Deluxe pads start braking under light pressure. The stock pads needs a significant amount of pressure before they started braking effectively.

One ore thing, avoid Performance Frictions like the plague. They have horrible braking distances and tons of brake dust. I put them on the Saleen and I couldn't drive 100 miles without finding brake dust all over the wheels. Axxis and PBR are actually the same company. If you see the boxes from each, this is readily apparent. One of the best sources for Axxis pads is Brake Parts Warehouse(BRAKECO.COM).
