A/C compressor belt squeal

Hi,

When i start my car, i get a loud, high pitched squeal.
It goes away after i rev it up a few times, or just drive it past 3k rpms.
Im pretty sure its the a/c compressor belt.

The belt itself seems to be in good condition, looks fairly new. The PO told me the compressor was brand new.

I tried spraying WD-40 on the belt, but it doesnt seem to make a difference.

The nut thing that is attached to the belt tensioner doesnt seem to tighten or loosen the belt at all, no matter how much i turn it. Perhaps it is stripped.

The pulley attached to the tensioner didnt turn before, but after messing with the tensioner, i got it to spin with the belt, but it still squeals.

I found out today i can stop the squealing if i start it up with the a/c off, then turn it on then off again.

Someone please help!
Thanks,
Zac

Hey, you can't just crank on the adjusting bolt, you need to loosen the lower pulley bolt first. You will break the assembly with what you are doing.

Ill try that. I did try for a little bit, but the rachet doesnt fit, and i dont have a breaker bar for my open wrench.

Thanks.

I wouldn't recommend spraying WD40 directly onto your belts...they could start slipping. I've heard that PAM works pretty well though.

i had a similar problem. turned out the belt was rubbing against something (i coudlnt find out what it was) and was causing it to sqeak. the belt lube from autozone did the trick.

Before we go start getting out of hand here. the OP NEEDS to loosen that pulley nit first. If your ratchet doesn't fit, find something that does before trying to tighten the idler, and before posting another post about, IMO of course.

Well i did get everything figured out.

Since i didnt loosen the nut first, i bent the tensioner (this was rubbing against he belt). Bought a new tensioner off someone on the forums, but the tensioner didnt extend the same length.

I had to go and buy another belt about 2 inches shorter.

$22 and 10 min later, problem solved and no squeal since.
