I took this screen out the other day. I held it up and blew through it onto my hand. In mid breath, I moved it. I could tell a huge difference in air flow. This is definately a restriction. What is this thing for anyways??

Is is just extra protection to stop dirt/debris?

My 89 Mustang GT had one of these also, I removed it years ago.

uhmmm...

that's there just incase something happened and your wasn't attached. It's there as a safeguard to keep things like acorns, leaves, twigs, etc. from entering your engine.

Personally...

I'd leave it on, just in case

Yes, I believe this is just a back up screen, don't know for sure, haven't opened up the Max's intake tract yet. A lot of cars have this. Sometimes it helps to pull it out because it does restrict airflow, sometimes it hurts because the air tumbles and becomes more turbulent. I know some cars actually experienced losses with the removal of this. I'm not saying you will, but the only way to know for sure is to take it the dyno and a track.

I personally would leave it in as ispeed said, but before you do, see if it increases performance at all.

The MAF screen is there to smooth out the air flow so that the MAF sensor can get an accurate reading. I wouldn't remove it.

Removing the MAF screen may work on a mustang or camaro but on most fine imports it does nothing but mess up the idle and roughen out air flow through MAF which is not advised....

You are correct, UMD_MaxSE. Apparently, the turbulence generated when the screen is removed more than offsets any miniscule increase in air flow.

There is an old thread that discusses this issue in some length. Unfortunately, our search function is in such a state of disrepair that I can no longer find the thread. But I remember it well.

Screen Removal

I would like to see some dyno numbers on this. Unfortunatly, I was not gentle in removing my screen. I completely destroyed it ( I did it in the dark). If any of you guys get to a dyno session try removing it to see if there is an increase. Like I said, there was a huge difference in airflow when I blow through this screen onto my hand. I am sure the difference is even greater than that when the engine is at full throttle.

Thanks
Ray

a word of caution before anyone goes and tears out the screen. You can't go back and put the screen back. You will have to get a new MAF tube to replace it. The part costs around $400 or so since it includes the sensor....

Actually you can reinstall the screen. I had removed my screen a few times on my 2k Maxima just to play with to see if I noticed a difference. I noticed better throttle response, but that was about it. If you are careful and not brake the screen or maf you can remove it and reinstall it fine. Just have some really small screw drivers, flat heads. And slide it in the side of the screen where it slips into a slot, and bend it down. The screen will flex and will not break. Bend it enough where you can actually get it out. Then put it back in the same way.

Also Fbody's don't have MAF screens in there track....so obviously they don't need them

I'm not sure if the MAF screen is really a factor in keeping dirt out of the engine. I assume the air filter is designed for that purpose. But it might be a good idea to leave the MAF screen alone if you have an AEM Air Bypass Valve.

if you remove it, will it feel like having a tornado air installed?
