guages shroud rattle
guages shroud rattle
After 205k miles, I finally have my first interior rattle. It's the black shroud around the instrument gauge panel. There are 2 screws holding the upper part, and it's between those 2 screws that's rattling. If I push up on the shroud, it's quiet again. Any tips on how to solve this rattle? Double sided foam tape perhaps?

There's a TSB from Nissan on interior rattles. The instrument cluster black panel is included. The fix is simply what Nissan calls "friction tape" or self-adhesive foam tape (like used around house doors/windows). They are applied in various places to take up slack between parts. I did the TSB to my '97, and my interior is very quiet now. Not expensive, and not hard to do.
If buying the self-adhesive foam tape, get the thinnest you can find (probably around 3/8"). Although it may seem thicker tape might work better, it doesn't. And in some places, it is just too thick to fit the piece back on properly without forcing it. The idea is simply to prevent moving of the parts, and isolate them. In some places, the "friction tape" is a much better fit.
For the friction tape, I used a self-adhesive felt. My wife found it at Walmart in the arts/crafts area (it's called "Presto Felt). It comes in a sheet about the size of a piece of paper, and you can cut exactly the size/shape you need. Works really well for isolating parts and preventing squeaks and rattles. Placed in the right spots, it is extremely effective. If you can't find the felt type, they also have the same type of sheets in a 2mm thick adhesive black foam made by Darice called "Foamies". Both work equally well.
Whatever you use, make sure the area is clean so adhesives will stick. This is important on dash parts because of silicone type protectants usually being there.
Hope this helps.
