Can someone with a 5spd do a quick experiment for me?

Car is sitting in the garage, engine off, hood open, ebrake off and trans in 1st.

I grabbed hold of the radiator support and pushed the whole car backwards about 4" until it stopped (trans) and then pulled it firward again until it stopped.

Did this forward and back thing several times.

Describe the sound that you hear when the trans stops the car rolling each time.

For me, the sound is like 3 or 4 distinct clicks at almost the same time. Sounds like someone biting down on hard candy. Push the car back, crunch, pull the car forward, crunch. I actually expected the trans to stop the car almost silently, ie with no play at all.

Also, is it normal to be able to grab the driveshaft and move it in and out of the hub? It won't rotate at all, but I can move it about 1/32nd inch in and out of the hub. Both sides are like that.

your car shouldn't really move when you are in gear.

I'll try tomorrow.

There is always some play between the gears, axles, etc. How much I don't know offhand, but it is normal for even new gears.

Yes, a little axial play is normal since the snap ring is what holds it axially, and snap rings don't lock it perfectly into place.

Well he said into the hub, that's bad. Scruit, check your axle nuts, make sure they're tight...
