In my earlier post entitled "Has anyone ever gotten stopped with a radar detector?" someone put it's good to have a CB cause truckers talk about where the PO-PO's are. I'm realatively new to this and I see some new CB's on ebay w/ 40 channels hand held for 20 bones. Can anyone tell me about this. What channel are the truckers on? Do they hear me with a handheld?

CB is so limited...and so ghetto. Put a little time into it and get an Amateur Radio License.

CB works well when you're on a route the truckers use. On the other hand it's pretty useless when they aren't around - like Sunday during the day. It's not so important to get out as it is to listen. You definitely need an external antenna as metal blocks the CB frequency so it's unlikely one with a small antenna will work well at all inside the car.

Welll

Its channel 19 that most traffic is on.

Its doubtable that you will "transmit" very far with a handheld. Metal and lack of power. Most CB rigs use external amp and good ant to project. Most can key up and drown out civilians chatter.

I had 2 of the hh's and could not talk to my buddy who was only 100 yards up in his car. They were ditched(returned) at that point.

Get a good radar detector, use your common sense (never alone in the fast lane, weaving in and out of traffic, being the lead or last car, flying around blind curves or hills) and watchful eye and you should do pretty well. Forget about the CB.

But hey, just MHO...

In the late 70s (yeah, I was driving then wise ***) CBs were the rage after the Smokey and the Bandit movies. However, you'd look like a feckin idjit with a big whip antenna on your Max. LOL

A friend of mine got a CB for his Subaru. He says it's pretty amusing to listen to the truckers.
I was thinking of getting one too. Something under a $100 from RadioShack.
But I still didn’t get it cause of two problems.
First – I don’t know where to install it in my 2000 Maxima. I still have original CD/TAPE/TUNER and have no intentions of replacing it with anything else, so I can’t install CB in there.
Second – three feet+ antenna on the roof is not something that I want to put on the car.
So I don’t know…
Would be nice to know if somebody already installed CB on their Maxima and what they think about it.

I used to have a CB on my old Saab... I had a glass mount antenea that looked like a cell phone ant. I helped a lot on interstates, but the top speed of that car was about 90 something before the engine sounded like it was going to explode.. but at any rate.. there are some interesting conversations that go on over the airwaves also....

You could get one of those 14' fiberglass antenae's on your rear bumper, and tie it down to the front bumper ... and be sure to put a tennis ball on the back so that it doesn't hit your spoiler

scanner

Uniden has a new Bearcat scanner, where you teach it the frequencies of the police in the area, then it sounds an alarm when those transmissions are within a certain distance. Not perfect, but kinda neat, and in some cases very likely to work better than radar/laser detection. I wonder how likely a trooper is to utilize his radio, though, when he's running speed enforcement. Sounds like a crapshoot to me.

Wow... this is an old thread. I was hoping I could find someone else here on the org with my problem.
I found a spot to install a CB radio! In the glove box! The only problem I have now is a low profile antenna.
I looked around on the internet and found a antenna called the lil wilson! Its not as low profile as I would like but its an option for anyone else that is looking to install a CB and have it low profile!

I have the Uniden Bearcat 350 and love it! It picks up everything in my area. It came with everything in the box and was easy to install. I actually mounted it in front of my fuse box with the cover off. It mounts like a cb radio (for those that have used them)and I used plummers tape behind the dash and its mounted hard. No vibrations when driving and not really in the way entering and exiting my car. I'll take some photos soon. Here is a pic and the place I bought it from. The cops in my area like to play hide and good seek with their radar guns and talk to one another so I know when and where not to speed!
