What's up everyone? I was wondering how much a 92'Se 5 Sp with 130K miles is worth? its in very good condition, no visual signs of collision, interior is in good condition. No sunroof nor leather. The guys asking $4,000, but said he would give me an awesome deal. Wondering what would be the ideal price for this car. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again.

I have almost the same car except I'm @ 125K and have a sunroof. My car runs so smooth(stock)and is so fun to drive, I would recommend you buy it at that price. If well maintained I think my car can run and look good for another 3 years.

I wanna cry for you too, for 2800 I woulda bought the car for spare parts. I think the guy was lying if you offered 3500 then why would he sell it for 700 less. Maybe he thinks 3500 is too low and wants to find a better offer. Call him again and make a higher offer.

its running great!
i have some ridiculous plans for my car...some of which include engine/tranny rebuild, at which time i'll add some stage 1 cams, new VTCs, aluminum flywheel, stage 1 clutch, port+polish heads, extrude hone intake+exhaust manifolds...
don't misunderstand what i'm saying, my car isnt in need of anything except an oil change and some exhaust work, but i dont want to spend all my money on mods and have something major break. i'm also thinking about boring it out to 3.2L.
i dont want to get started on the plans for my car, but it does run good

the shop i goto claims they can get them. i forget the name of the company though. i asked the owner if he could get something similar to the JWT cams for the VG, only for my VE, he said he'd get back to me. i went back a few days later and he said he could get them, i said ok because i didnt/dont have the money and was just wondering if any were available.
if you want i'll stop by there tomorrow and get more info, just let me know.

Yes, please do. But how about just calling them? Make sure it's not a company that just regrinds the stock cams. Make sure you ask them if the are new billet cores or not. Get the cam specs. BTW. I have never, ever heard of a company offering cams for the VE but that doesn't mean they don't exist. Just means be wary.

the guy that i usually talk to wasnt there, i was going to talk to him today about my "variable intake" but his car wasnt there so i didnt stop.
anyway, they could very well be regrinds, but whats wrong with that(i honestly dont know, i'm not being an ***)?

Regrinds can be okay. But the quality is only as good as the work. If they aren't reground well or if they have not be heat treated right, the lobes will flatten. If the grinds aren't consistent, you will not get consistent lift at all the valves. This is on top of the specs for the regrind.

alright, i'll talk to him tomorrow.
if they're not regrinds and are comparable quality to the JWT cams for the VG, maybe i could setup a group deal.
i'll get the specs and post tomorrow.

just went to the shop.

well, i've got some bad news, i went to the shop and when the guy called his supplier. he then wrote down on his notepad "92 nissan maxima se 5 speed v6 SOHC stage 1" i saw it and said that it was a VE30DE, DOHC. he mentioned that to his supplier who then said "its not possible" so he called someone else and left a message. i said i was looking for regrinds or new cams, i didnt care, i just wanted an estimate on each.
i'll find out for sure tomorrow.

Re: just went to the shop.

Yeah, it's really easy to confuse the VG30 sohc and the VE30DE dohc motors because they are both 3-gen maximas and were made during the same years. They are probably just re-offering the JWT cams that were orignally for the Z31 300zs that have the VG30. Let me know what the guy says but don't get your hopes up.

Cams for the VE is VERY possible. Hell look how hard it is to develope Honda VTEC cams! But lo and behold there are about 3-4 companies offering cams for these complex head designs. The real problem is that the VE30DE is a rare engine, was only made in 1992-1994, wasn't available in other countries(as far as I know) and it's inside a family sedan. Makers just can't see a return on their R&D in this case. Custom grinds would be the only alternative, but who in the hell knows what specs to grind them to get more power/pass emissions/still idle etc??? When SCC did a cam comparasion on the different SR20de 4 cylinder SEr engine, it says it took one major cam company 4-5 grinds to get it right. As a consumer, I can't justify paying somone to grind that many grinds, doing that many installs(big pain) and then getting all these grinds dyno'd.

well, when i talk to the guy tomorrow i'll ask for the suppliers phone# then i'll take my car in and have them look at it. couldnt the company just take the performance cams from a VG and adapt it to the VE head? are these engines that different? i'm sure there are alot of small differences, but it should be possible to use the VG cam as a building block. at least figure out the differences and make changes accordingly.
as far as R&D goes, how much could blank cams possibly be? if i give my car to a shop to make cams for it, i would be willing to buy 4 or 5 sets if its guarenteed to work, and if it screws anything up, they pay for it. i'm more worried about pressuring someone into making them that they'll do a halfass job and something will break and i'll be screwed until i get the money to rebuild.

Billet blank cams(unground)from Nissan are pretty pricey items. You can't really take grinds from the VG and apply them to the Ve beucase they are pretty different engines sohc/dohc 2valve/4valve etc..

Cam makers could take the stock cams and make an educated guess as to what would work but in order to not to loose any more low end and still meet emissions, they would probably be pretty conservative.

well, i went back yesterday and the owner talked to the "cam place"(as i put it) and they said they'd need to look at the car because i dont know how the valves are adjusted and neither does the shop owner, so when i get my car back i'll make an appointment and we'll see what happens.
also, jeff, what do you mean still meeting emissions?

Well if you state requires your car to be emission(exhaust smiffer) tested in order to get your license plate tabs, you can't have cams that have mega lift/duration.

i have to pass an emissions test every two years, but thats it. i guess the lower my emissions, the more aggressive cams i can get assuming its possible to do it for the VE *AND* fit my budget. i guess i'll find out when i get my car back. damn exhaust people are taking too long!

You shoulda got it earlier, the edmunds private party value on a 92 se with 146k would be much higher than $4000. I feel I got a pretty descent deal for my 1990 GXE with 110k miles at $4000... I wish I woulda known this guy, woulda sold my car for $4500 (the guy who sold it to me could have easily..) and got that car and used the extra $500 to start modding it!
