What do you guys think of the Sony CDX-MP450X? Are there any other comparable units? My friend has an AIWA MP3 unit, but he says it's not that great.

Also, does anyone know what's involved in replacing the Bose Headunit but keeping the bose speakers? Any special adapters or wiring harness necessary, or can it just be plug-n-play/

Thanks

Vin

How much did you paid for it? At least a grand judging by the website. And it's only 10GB. IMHO it's waist of money.

The problem with CAR mp3 player is that they are very expensive and you can use them only in the car.

I got the Rio VOLT MP3 CD player for about $160. It plays CDs with burned MP3 and WMA files on them. Has a two line LCD, wired remote control etc. Upgradable firmware. Another good thing about this player is that it's like any portable CD player could be used anywhere. It's probably the best bang for the buck. All you have to do is burn your mp3s on a CD(which you can do on almost any new pc) I have more then hundred mp3 CDs already

But RIO was the best about six month ago when it was release. The Compaq makes a neat CD MP3 player which they sell through the RadioShack for $200. It has infrared remote and FM tuner. IRIVER (maker of Rio Volt and other clones) will release soon the second version of the player with better LCD display and remote control, and bunch of other cool new features. I'll probably will get it when it will come out and will have to sell my original Rio Volt.

Good luck with your search for an mp3 player.

Thanks for your input...

Yeah, the RIO is really expensive for what I want. I don't have the money to shell out $1000 for a head unit. It's not very appealing to have to take out the whole unit to download MP3s to it via USB cable.

What do you use to connect the Rio Volt to your head unit? Are you using one of those cassettes with the wire coming out of it?

Thanks

Vin

Yes ;( Unfortunally stock radio/cd/tape unit does not come with audio in jack so I have to use the convertor. And I don't want to change the stock unit. I tried radio FM generators - wais of money, no quality at all, alot of noice and very low volume. I got a cheap cassete tape converter with the power adaptor for about $12. It makes some noise when plays, but when you crank up the volume - it's no problem
I agree - it's a little hassle to connect those wires every time that you want to listen to music, comparing to the head unit, but moneywise and portabilitywise - it's defenetely the much better choice.

Some new.
Pioneer announced their new car unit DEH-P900HDD. It plays regular CDs, MP3 CDs, AM/FM tuner, Memory Stick slot, and built in 10GB HDD ) But I don't know the price....

If I were you - I would go to radioshack and check out the new Copmaq mp3/cd player. It might be the best player of this kind on the market at the moment. Or maybe wait for RioVolt II.

good luck.

I have the Sony head unit. I like it, and happy with it. Its pretty nice, and made my stock bose sound better, and my subs also.

I have the Kenwood KDC-8017. I've been pretty happy with it. Hide or remove faceplate, security code, change button color etc.

It does a couple of things the Sony doesn't. Importantly, it will display the ID3TAGS, so you know what's playing.

Using the auxiliary inputs you could still hookup something like a Rio or Nomad. I've got an old Toshiba laptop that I'm going to use as an MP3 jukebox, soon as I find the time.
