What do you guys think? I spoke to my local transmission shop the other day about a bunch of things (vb mods, synthetic fluid, transmission coolers, manually shifting vs leaving it in 'D', etc., etc.) and after talking to him, I think I am going to go for the synthetic transmission fluid. He stocks Mobil 1, it is what most people get and is the cheapest. He doesn't know too much about Redline and although he doesn't stock Amzoil(sp.?), he says it's the best - but expensive. My question(s) for you guys are: is it even worth doing a changeover to sythetic? And, if yes, what brand do you recommend? Thanks in advance. :)

I put REDLINE in my 300 ZX tt and the results were fabulous
was like a trans rebuild. Would not have believed the results.

I did a flush with Penzoil Synthetic blend trans fluid. Make a noticable difference in the shift. It's only a buck or two at any auto parts store. Nice smooth firm shifts at any temp.

 

I read up the specs on Redline ATF and MB1 and have to say that they're pretty much the same. Two reasons I pick MB1 is -
1- availability.
2- I also read some where that you can't mix different synthetic brands together.

 

anyone know about how much it would cost to have your old trans fluid flushed out and replaced with synthetic?

see5: what were the 'fabulous' results? Smoother shifting? Cooler? Quicker shifting? Quieter? Etc....

mdr: Thanks man. You are right, he was explaining that to me. He said you can't mix reg. w/ most synthetics. He said mobil 1 can! So most off-roaders use it so in case they need it on the spot, they can put in regular. You will lose the beneficial properties but at least it will save you. That probably doesn't apply to us too much though. But you did bring up a good point - availability. Hear anything about Amzoil? Also, what do you think about your Mobil 1? How do you like it?


hjerrod: He told me Mobil 1 was about $8 a quart, we need about 10 qts, labor would be about $80 so roughly $150 total.

I've got a 97 SE 5spd. Changed to Redline MT 90 Synthetic. Bit better neutral to first changes. Haven't noticed any other differences. Maybe a bit smoother all around. I'm sure that it would make a HUGE difference if I were living in the snow belt (I'm in Savannah, GA). As I remember the oil cost me about $57 and I changed it myself on a lift. I'll always use synthetics, trans and oil. Currently using Mobil 1 10-30 and a Pure One filter. Might change to Mobil 1 Synthetic Trans oil next time, but know that it will be synthetic.
