The other night my maxima left me stranded. Basically, I have noticed it starting a little slow (the starter is tunrning over slowly) the past couple weeks. I checked the battery and it was fine. It doesnt always turn over slowly, just every once in a while. So the other night I was out, got in the car to go home and it wouldnt turn over. Had power, bright lights and everything but it wouldnt turn over. I had it towed to the dealer, they jumped in the next morning and it started right up. So I picked it up and took it home. Same thing. Starts real slow now and then if I shut if off right away it wont turn over at all. Wait a while and it will turn over slowly again. I have swapped the battery in it with one that I know is good and still have the same problem. Could it be the starter? The dealer was telling me that they get a dead spot in them but that wouldnt explain why its turning over slowly. BTW - its a 95 with 65k miles. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason

Newbies...

Yeah, here's an idea... if you have a 95 ... try NOT posting this in the 5th gen (2000+) forum.

I would say it is the alternator. Do your lights brighten and dim when you rev the car up?

Well if you know your charging system is up to spec, then it is probably the starter or the starter solenoid. If you are getting no cranking at all, I would suspect the solenoid. If you are getting slow cranking, it may be the starter motor. I would also check the electrical connections, the battery cables (there may be corrosion), and of course, make sure the battery is at 12.5V+ with the engine off, around 14V with the engine on.

Also, check the battery cable and cable connections. A dirty/corroded connection causes resistance in the starting circuit that would cause the problem you described.

Thanks for all of your help. Basically the starter motor was turning over really slowly and sometimes not at all. I checked all of the connections and the battery and everything looked good. Finally I replaced the starter and that took care of the problem. My unlce (also a mechanic) gave me good explanation. Basically the bushings in the starter were shot and therefore the motor had a lot of drag on it. I bet if I would have put an amp meter on it I would have seen a ton of current draw. Anyway, that was the solution.

Thanks for all your help.

question about forum...

Don't mean to question things here, but why did two different people tell this guy to not post this in the 5th generation forum (clee130, MaineI30)? I found it in the 4th Gen forum. I even checked the 5th Gen forum to see if he double posted but I didn't see it....so....uh....I guess I'm lost on this one? As you can see I'm a newbie so take it for what it's worth...

Again, don't want to cause any trouble but I guess I'd like to know if I'm missing something here...I apologize if I'm misunderstanding.

Indy - I'm guessing one of the moderators moved the message from the 5th gen forum to the 4th gen, where it belonged.

ahhh....

Ahhh,

I wondered about that but I didn't know if maybe it would say that it had been moved or not...

Thanks a lot,
