Whith what kind of tires do I replace stock Protenza?

In your opinion - what is the best replacement tires for stock 225/50/R17V on the stock 17" rims?

Thanks all.

my very inefficient solution is to get new rims as well as tires when the tires get worn out.

Agreed. Feel free to do it before the tires wear out if you like.

Go with a 235/40 Nitto NT 555. They are pretty resonable.

Proxes suxes

My Proxes A05's were worn out after 22k miles. The front two were pretty worn down, but the back two are still good. I did what UMD_Max suggested, I got 18" wheels and Nitto tires. My stocks were 16", so it was a big change. Since you got stock 17" wheels, maybe you should get some 19" or 20" wheels.

Nitto NT450 Extreme

I have the stock 17" rims with the odd size 225/50/17 and with the section out there it wasn’t hard to choose. These tires handle with excellent wet and dry traction I would recommend highly and odly enough they come in the size of 225/50/17 and i only paid $120 per tire

I checked some websites for Nitto 450 reviews. Some people highly recommend this tires. But a lot of people say that the tires are garbage.

Can you give me more detail please? For how long do you have them? How many miles do you have on them? What kind of driving do you do? How fast do you usually go? Do you think they are better in handeling than stock Protenza?

That would really help. Thanks.

I went to tirerack and tirediscount a few days ago for some reading. IMO, BFG Comp TA ZR's 235/45/ZR17 is a good choice considering the tire's tread life and the cost.

I have had my Nitto NT-450 Extreme’s for approximately 4 months now. I drive approximately 110 to 120 miles per day (It is mostly highway miles) But I make sure I hit the curves of the back roads every so often. My approximate speed is 80 to 90 MPH (sometimes when the time and feelings right 100 to 120 MPH) As far as putting them up against the Potenza’s; I would rather ride on my rims then buy the Potenza. The Dry traction on the Nitto is much better then the Potenza and the Wet traction there is no comparison. The Potenza has no Wet traction were as the Nitto does. I guess at this point I sound like a Nitto sales person but I truly would buy the Nitto's again. I hope this helps you out.

You actually do sound like Nitto salesman. Joke
Seriously - thanks for the reply. This really helps. At least I know that one person that has car/road/speed condition exactly like mine - happy with the tires. I used to drive also 110m a day mostly highway, and keeping cruising speed at 80-95, but going 100-120 a lot of times when the conditions are right.

UMD_MaxSE and mbcp_tdogg – you suggested to get new wheels. Could you be more specific please? What wheel size? Tire size? Do you have anything specific in mind? But buying new wheels and tires will require much greater budget than buying just new tires, right? Is it worth the money? Personally I don’t care a lot about the look – all I care about is highway performance all-season. I would appreciate you reply.

rocketshipon19", maximadave, MNBM – is it really a good Idea putting 235/45 tires on stock 17x7 wheels? I’m really concern about safety and performance. Safety first of course. And with the way that I drive ( 90+++ on the highway ) , I’m concern how safe is using 235/45 on stock rims. Can you add more details from your experience?

Thanks a lot to all input!

New wheels and tires will cost more for sure. But, you can go with a specific look in terms of the wheel... If you only care about performance and not looks, then perhaps you don't want new wheels. However, the stock 17's are pretty heavy, and not good for true performance.... I would either go with 17's or 18's....

Here's Take Two:

I understand your concern from the $$$ angle. I probably would've stayed with stocks if I had to put in for my set of wheels all by myself. Fortunately, I was able to find a reasonable buyer very early on so that gave me the freedom to get rid of the stocks and the heavy 17s without spending much at all. Because I got to choose what I wanted, I went with 18s (bigger) and 7.5s (wider). In hindsight, I probably would've gone with 18X8 but oh well. For me it's been worth the $$$ because I did not trust the Potenzas at all from the beginning and would've changed out my tires like what you're trying to do. If you are going to keep your stocks, it looks like the Nittos are the answer but if somehow you can sell your wheels for a decent price, I would. Good luck and keep us posted.
