BMW 740 IL kill
I just beat a BMW 740 IL. Im coming home from the store and come up to a stop light and look over and it's a 740 IL. The guy inside signaled to race so I rev to 2000 rpms the light turns green drop the clutch and get a perfect lauch. The begining of first he gained a 1/2 car on me. Once I hit the top of first Igained back 1/4 of a car. By the time I hit second we were dead even. Then I started pulling on him and by the time I hit the top of 3rd gear I had a car length on him. Introduction: I just got a brand new 2001 Maxima GXE 5 spd. a little over a month ago and have already racked up 2200 miles. I love my new maxima its a great car. I look forward to having it many years to come. I got the 2001 because I thought it looked better and got a really good deal on it.

740iL: 4288 lb <== whoa momma
540i : 3803 lb
...500 lb's certainly will make a pretty big difference in performance, and that also explains why a 540i will smoke ya. But seriously, low-15's for a 4300lb car with "only" 282HP isn't all that bad, especially considering the fact that a 3500lb TL-S with 260HP will run about the same.
(It's all the low-end torque in the Bimmer V8)
Im tired of these clowns posting BS roadkills. My dad had a 98 740iL which had 282 hp and 310 ft/lbs, not the newer 324 ft/lbs version. If this guy beat you off the light, there is NO WAY you are gonna reel him in. The gear ratio of these cars prohibit fast take offs, but once rolling they are very fast. Now i have a 2000 Maxima 5 speed with mods and there is no way I would beat a 740iL from a roll. This guy claims he pulled in second and third gear...roughly 38-98 mph. Weight really doesnt make that big of a difference when rolling. Its from a dead stop when weight comes into play.
Oh oh Steve ... this is pretty convincing 2 ...
.. damn .. I'm so gullible ...

Major BS
Dude, i can guarantee you he was not even racing. Off the line, maybe you will have him to 30mph, but after that, its bye bye time!. I still love my max.

Max GXE 5M: 3186lb / (222HP * 0.85) = 16.88 lb/fwhp ding ding ding, we have a winner!
Max GXE 4A: 3235lb / (222HP * 0.80) = 18.22 lb/fwhp
Well, these numbers are a little deceiving, especially for the automagic because we're dealing with two different types of engines. The Max has its high performance lower displacement VQ, and the BMW has a massive 4.4L V8 with mad amounts of low-end horsepower (because of all the torque), and that doesn't factor into the equation here. But the BMW did pull a half car on him at the start, which isn't surprising because 300+ lb-ft of torque will definitely help you there. But the Max 5-spd has a better HP-to-weight ratio so he was able to pull on it once the revs built up. Published data shows the 740iL at low-mid-15's, and a Max 5-spd is slightly faster than that. And plus, Shoopdog29 did say that he got a "perfect" launch.
The BMW 740iL may give the "perception" of being faster, and gobs of low-end torque will do that to you. Same things with SUV's like the Expedition with the 5.4L V8. Tons of low end make it feel "fast" off the line, but the top end is relatively not that great and tons of weight slows it down.
Speaking of weight, weight matters all the time, and not just off the line. When you're in first gear you'll feel the performance of the car the most becasue that's where you have the most power at the wheels. In the taller gears there's less power at the wheels and your ability to sense changes in performance becomes diminished. But the weight is always there and it's always a factor.

Hearing that kinda makes the 2002 mode sound worth it.

BTW, he said the race was from a DEAD STOP. 740s run mid to low 15s in the mags....which is probably mid to high 15s in the real world. I don't see why it is so hard to believe that a 5-speed max pulled a car one the 740 to 80. Mabye the 740 would have won on the "highway" as you always like to say, but that fact is, it's wasn't on the highway, it was out of a stoplight. Stop giving the guy $hit.

Transmission
Gear ratios (:1)
I/II/III/IV/V/R
3.57/2.20/1.51/1.00/0.80/4.10
Final drive ratio :1 2.93
Check the gear ratios out. They are designed for autobahn cruising and effortless passing at higher speed. My dad had a 740iL for 3 years and that was my primary transportation before i got my Maxima. BTW I would like to know if this guy that he raced had sport rims on it and if the headlamps were scalloped.
People who said 740iL are probably people who have never had a ride in it. The 740iL is a big @$$ car! It is just like a shortened limo.
No way it can beat a Maxima, even the GLE. The 740il is not even a car to go fast, but the Maxima is a 4 door body 2 door soul!!!

OK i don't want anybody to get mad or anything! I am 16 I have a 01' SE anniversery Edition!! In ofcourse Majestic Blue! My dad has a 01' 740iL! And I can guarntee that a 740iL will beat a Maxima! As heavy of a car it is, it is Just amazingly fast. a five speed max claims 6.9 to 60 and a auto 740iL claims 6.7 to 60. I have done a lot of reasearch on both cars! The 740iL running in M (manual) mode with defintly beat a Maxima and even running in auto mode it will beat it! As much as that sucks its the truth!
guys come on why would he lie about some stupid **** like that...... there r so many more factors in racing than just hittin the gas..... i have also raced a 740iL 2001 with a kid driving it and walked him by 2 cars to 100 mph the 740s r nice but dont have the go they should have..... if he says he won than he did.... all of u guys said the same thing to me when i posted that i beat a 740iL as well.... its possible and i have an auto! get off his back! i believe u buddy!
My story is not BS. He beat me of the line by 1/2 because he has 300+ ft/lb. Then on the top end I cought up and by about 95 I was a car length in front. Im guessing that it wasn't a new one though cause it had the old headlight not the new ones.
trust me, there is no way he could of beat it. my mom has a '97 740il and my bro has a 5spd ann. ed. maxima. we did a 0 to 100 test. my bro is great with a stick shift car, he can launch perfectly almost always. i was driving the bimmer. of the line (with him having a perfect launch) we were dead even to about 30-35 then i started pulling on him a little. being that i always boasted that i could beat him with the bimmer he got on it a little to much and chirped a tinnnnnyyyy bit into third and it was alllllll over from there. even if he didn't chirp i already started to pull on him and since i can always murder him on the highway i would of definitely beat him if he had not chirped.
the 740il can haul some serious *** all the way to about 135 (that's when the speed limiter kicks in) also at about 135mph the rpm's are only about 4000

Actually

Depending on which year, the 740 models have different engines. 1995 740i/iL had the older 4.0L 282HP/295TQ. This car was put down for being sluggish down low. 0-60 times where between 7.9-8.4 seconds (I would believe you raced this one). 1996 is when the 740iL received the 4.4L shared with the E39 540iA/540iM. 0-60 times where between 6.5-6.8seconds. The 740i was dropped this year and returned in 1997. In 2000, the 740i/iL Received VANOS on the V8 engine. TQ is up. The 740i sport received the steptronic tranmission, shorter final drive, and other upgrades. 0-60times were 5.8-6.0. Pretty good for a 4,200lbs sedan with 282HP.
BTW, there is only a 10LBS difference between the i and iL models

The NEW 740iL's run low to mid-15's in the 1/4 mile.
A Maxima 5-spd will do low-15's with a pretty good driver, and will break into the 14's with a DAMN good driver and favorable conditions...
So are you guys that are doubting this kill also saying that higher quarter mile times are better and that 1000 lb's of extra weight in the 740iL doesn't make a difference???

I think he's talking about Will's auto.
Maybe the 740 driver wasn't going all out? Maybe <insert a plausible reason> and so he lost. This theoretical or I tried it myself crap doesn't mean jack for that one particular race.

I believe the 5-spd kill, but it would be mighty hard for an automagic unless it was seriously modded. The Max/auto would probably still have a better peak horsepower to weight ratio than a 740iL, but the 740iL has significantly more low-end and that would make up the difference a good bit. It also has a 5-spd auto instead of a 4-spd auto and that would probably put the 740 in the lead all the way.
I don't know anything about the previous-gen 7-series so I cant' comment on any of that stuff...

Let me put it this way. I have driven quite a few vehicles (including 740iLs and Maximas). However, the main reason the 740 got beat is because of power to weight ratio.
However, if the 740 had Stage II Dinan Mods.....buh-bye Max!

I bet it'd beat a GLE, or any automagic. The 740iL does have an extra gear, and a buttload more low-end torque, which wasn't accounted for in those numbers I posted. The 740's run low-mid-15's, but I don't think any stock automagics are that fast. More like mid-high-15's for them - with powershifting. I bet a lightly modded automagic could take one out though...

Weight really doesnt make that big of a difference when rolling. Its from a dead stop when weight comes into play.
Go Maxima!

No way it can beat a Maxima, even the GLE. The 740il is not even a car to go fast, but the Maxima is a 4 door body 2 door soul!!!
