the 740il can haul some serious *** all the way to about 135 (that's when the speed limiter kicks in) also at about 135mph the rpm's are only about 4000

If this guy beat you off the light, there is NO WAY you are gonna reel him in. The gear ratio of these cars prohibit fast take offs, but once rolling they are very fast. Now i have a 2000 Maxima 5 speed with mods and there is no way I would beat a 740iL from a roll. This guy claims he pulled in second and third gear...roughly 38-98 mph. Weight really doesnt make that big of a difference when rolling. Its from a dead stop when weight comes into play.

I believe him, personally. Even if the 740il has a big engine, what any racer will tell you is it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning. Maybe the 740 didn't want to go too fast or something in fear of cops. But that doesn't mean he "wins" because his car has a bigger engine.
Also, I believe that people generally don't post BS kills because no one on this forum should be that big of an internet dork as to fabricate stories in order to boost self esteem.
I'm not certain why many of you dispute his claim. We don't seem to know which 740 he raced. The numbers for some of the 740s clearly put them within the range of a maxima. Who knows what the circumstances were - did the 740 brake torque, did he have slow reaction times, or for that matter if it was a few years old - did it need a tune-up. Geez - it really isn't hard to believe.
You can flame me as well. I've raced and beaten a 740 from a roll - don't know what year or configuration.
It was a highway race. I passed him (not trying to race), he then decides to pass me, as he gets even with me we are going about 80. I drop from 4th to 3rd and we were off. I pulled about 1/2 car on him through redline in 3rd. As i shifted to 4th, it stayed about the same. He backed off at about 110 as we began to approach the toll plaza.
We raced again coming out of toll booths. I had the pass and he had to pay so I slowed to let him get through the pay booths and waited. We hit it again while I was in second as he approached me. This time I pulled a little more than a car through redline third before we hit some slaloms - he stayed right there - I was impressed with the handling. We then hit traffic. Gave each other thumbs up.

I can't believe....
this thing is up to 4 pages!!! If the man says he beat it, he beat it! Why u guys doubting him??? He said he beat 'this' particular 740il on 'this particular' day. He did not say he can beat all 740il on any day. So all u guys with your mommys', daddys', and relatives and friends' 740ils... get off his back! I believe u guys!
And all u Max owners... shame on u!!! You should be backing your fellow Maxima brothers... not stabbing them!!!
Even Steve... who doesn't even own a Max is not doubting him. You guys need to chill.... just enjoy the ride

Okay, it's been a while since I checked the board, but let me tell you about a few of my experiences on the Autobahn here in Germany with the 740's. I can hang with a 740, possible very slightly pull one up to 80-90, then the 740 is gone. I have attempted this on several occasions, with the same results. Heck, on top end a 325 can even outrun the Maxima. You have to respect the BMWs for the top end. (I think the BMWs in the US are speed limited to 130 in the US, they aren't over here.)
I even ran a 728 one day, could hang with him till about 140, then he was gone too. The Maxima is out of its element in a high speed run with any BMW with a motor greater than 2.5 liters.
I'm not bashing Maximas, as I love mine. But the BMW is made to fly! And that they do.

~~ ok , One day I beat a Manual VIPER GTS! (it was rolling back and forth, I could hear him rev to keep it still), From a dead stop I launch my old 1991 accord, boom the viper is off, 2 cars on the jump, then at about 55mph i started pulling on him, and then at 70 i passed him, I got to the shopping plaza, and I saw that the viper followed me, then he parked right across from me..... In the handicapped spot, he comes out of the car with crutches and his left leg in a cast, hey says to me, HAHAH If only my leg wasnt broken!
MORAL OF THE STORY, ITS THE DRIVER !!! ITS NOT THE CAR, THE CAR WILL PERFORM, BUT IT NEEDS SOMEONE TO KNOW HOW TO PUSH IT!, YOU PUT GRANDMA IN A INDY RACER, SHE'LL GET LAPPED BY A METRO, WHY, SHE CANT DRIVE IT LIKE A RACE CAR!,
