Did you guys not consider the 5 speed @ all when you were buying your cars? Was it not available?

or is it s/t u had considered from the start (I hope not!)?

When I got my Maxima, I wasn't planning on modding or racing it. Next thing I know, I find this forum, then I watch The Fast and The Furious, now I'm hooked. Unfortunately at the time I got my car, I didn't know how to drive a manual, so I got the automatic. Now I want to race, and the 5spd is better for that. The 6spd from the 2002 would be even better, but people have said it probably won't work with the 2K engine.

Also, I tend to eat while driving a lot, and that's easier with an automatic.
I've stopped eating in my car since I started taking better care of it.

It's not a question of mods or anything. The feeling of doing what you want with the car is what it's all about. You need to go from 70 to 100 mph in a hurry, clutch - 3rd - gas - declutch. BAMMM! You've just kicked it up a notch.

I drove the automatic as a demo and I never drove a Maxima stick before taking possession (I owned it before I drove it). All I can say is thank God I didn't take an automatic, not that I wanted one in the first place.

But it all comes down to a personal choice. If you like auto, fine, if you like sitck, fine.

this is true enuff ... I thought people that modded cars were wasting their $$$ .. I laughed @ all the Civic drivers ... well .. I still do .. but now look @ my mod list! I could've bought a Beemer or Audi no problem! Would I do that in hindsite? Nope ... luv my car ...

I feel 4 guys that want 2 do a trannie swap tho ... u could have got a manual when u first bought the car ... for about $1500 less (Cdn) ... but now ... you're paying $$ for something that originally would have saved you $$$ ... yikes!

Ouch, thanks for bringing light to our blunder!

Can't worry about that now. Must move on and get the manual with LSD.

Ohhhhh.....February for me....at least that's the PLAN. Speaking of which, anyone know of a good place in the VA/MD/DC or N. Carolina to do the swap? Might as welll start looking now.

I can't say I mind my automagic too much, since it still allows me to whoop a lot of butt (thank you VQ), but with the 5psd I'll be whooping a hell of a lot more butt, and much worse than before. Damn, 5 friggin months.

auto vs.5-spd

I originaly wanted a 5-speed. But the dealer only had automatics. After testing one, I thought it was o.k. My wife doesn't drive stick, so an auto would make things easier. Plus I'm not patient...when I want something, I want it now...and didn't want to deal with a dealer trade. In retrospect, I would have definitely waited or shopped elsewhere. The auto is lame! It shifts too slow, too early, and saps too much power. LSD isn't even necessary because it barely has enough power to spin ONE wheel! Oh well...live and learn.

Man, changing the transmission would kill the resale value...

it would be nice if they had tiptronic-style shifting on all autos. that's what I liked about the chrysler 300m and acura 3.2tl, but I still think the Maxima's a cooler car.

The auto's not horrible, by no means is it a slow car, and you can still "shift" yourself. Albeit, it's not the same as kicking it into 3rd gear on the freeway, but it's not like you can't kick azz on plenty of other cars out there..

also, I was in a sticky situation today that made me glad I had auto... you know, one of those steep driveways that taked you to the roof of a building.. and there's something going on up there, so you're stuck on the ramp with a tailgater... I was like "PHEW, thanks for auto"

anyways, still wish i had the 6spd.

Hey ohboiya, tell me about it! In november 2000 my lease on a 98 Max SE was over, I was looking to buy it but the buy back was insanely high ( around 23K CDN ) so after trying the 2K1 stick, I was amaze how this car pulled. I was decide to get another Max SE, but my dealer just couldn't get a stick with the color and package I wanted ( Sterling Mist ) The one they could have quickly was the GLE with 16" no leather, so for me it was a downgrade ( no flame about GLE ) since I have kids, leather is the way to go, easier to clean. But anyway I wanted a fully loaded car, a couple of day after my first visit, my sales rep called me to offer me a 2K1 SE 20th Sterling Mist fully loaded. After 5 minutes reflexion, I decided to go with it thinking that I will shortly forgot the stick, ( I was totally wrong, I always shift my auto tranny manually ).

Last week I went to my dealer and I saw a 2K2 GLE, honestly I think 2K & 2K1 look better, so I am not going to trade this year, perhaps next year, all depending on what Nissan will offer, but my next MAX will be stick.

Did I tell you my next max will be stiiiiiiiiiickkkkkkk.

Cheers

The sticker that came on my car says it has LSD. Is there supposed to be a switch or does it just activate itself when the computer thinks it is needed?
PS. I get some wheel hop on wet pavement with my stock Potenzas.
