A co-worker saw me reading maxima.org one day and gets into conversation about cars. He has a 2k1 VW Jetta VR6 (air intake and springs lowered) he wants to race me with my 6. Says he will kick my ***.

His car, I think only sports 175HP but I think he has a better lb/hp ratio (not sure).

Personally, I think I can open a can of whup *** on him but just wanted to hear from you guys.

You should take him if you're stick. I took one with what sounded like an Intake, and exhaust, and I'm auto an 4th Gen, and he was 5spd,(prolly didn't know how to drive very well) He had an extra passenger and they both looked a wee bit larger than I am. He got the hole shot, but the auto Max's second gear got him in the end, I beat him by about a 1/2 car in my auto 4th gen w/mods. Good Luck.

I ran a modded 1.8T jetta and it was a dead match with us exchanging back and forth about a bumper length. All I heard was a BOV and I know he had exhaust body kit wheels etc.. I was suprised at the outcome and all I had was a UDP for my performance mods

I ran with a 1.8T Jetta with EVERY mod out there from 70-125ish and we were side-by-side the entire time! To say the least, I was surprised. I thought I'd AT LEAST walk him but nope, he was right next to me all through 3rd 4th and part of 5th. G'luck

Considering the age of this thread, I wonder if the race ever took place and what the results were...

I think he mentioned he's got a "6", which I'm assuming he means he's got a 6-speed. The VR6 is nice, but it doesn't have the low end torque of a 1.8T because of the lack of turbo. I don't know about your stick driving skills or his for that matter, but with same quality drivers, I think you would take him, but I doubt you would WALK him. As someone mentioned, VW's ARE underrated. Take the challenge anyway, and let us know how it goes--just make sure you win!

Um did you say VR6 don't have the low end of a 1.8T??? It is the other way around. VR6 have great torque response.

What I meant to say (in case it's not clear) is that the 1.8T has its peak torque at lower rpms than the vr6. Per edmunds.com,
1.8T 173lbs/ft @ 1950rpm

VR6 195lbs/ft @ 3200 rpm

The VR6 has more torque overall, but at a slightly higher rpm (because of no turbo).

Judging by the date this thread was started and no response, he probably had his a$$ handed to him.

I hope he didn't punk out of it. I'd rather get beat than back out, but that's me.

Well said. If he did punk out of it, he might as well sell his Maxima and get a KIA.

It shouldn't be a problem. I raced a 2k1 with full exhaust at a minimum and took him farely easily in my 2k2 auto. Like someone mentioned, don't bet slips, but I feel pretty confident that your family sedan will embarass him

I'm with you man.....on monday night I raced a '01 S500 with three people in my car on the BQE. The guy looked about 70 years old and he promptly handed my *** to me on a platter and even turned on his hazards to signal the win!!

I gave him the ole thumbs up as we passed him.

Thread from the dead ...

man this is old thread...

We settled this a while back. We never ran from a dead stop. I'm gonna get street racing flames for this.

One night late on a certain highway we ran from 40+mph (he's auto, my six auto, OD off). He got his *** handed to him 2 times up to like 90+mph.

say when
woosh out

Kinda the other way around. The VR6's have a smooth, strong power delivery, while the 1.8t has to wait until about 2k RPM, then its whiplash time to 6k RPM (esp. if its chipped).
