I was so happy when i finally got it, and reading instructions that it only takes hour and 15 min., but it took me good few hours playing around with the hammer to get the square bracket around the trailing arm, and then when i was tightening the screws the thing twisted off.
I really dont' know what to think, but i'm calling addco tomorrow, to see what they say.

why does everyone keep reporting that you need to hammer in the brackets a little with the addco rsb? is there something wrong with it or is it always like this?

 

why would u need a hammer to seat the brackets onto the trailing arms???
Stillen ones are sperate pieces and you bolt the two brackets together...no hammers needed...

if you have to bang it with hammer to just install it, that's just shady(that's what i call 'make-it-fit')..but that's just my opinion...

 

that's how it is though, i think that rsb was made for the 4th gen and they never re-made it so it could fit the 5th gen, cause it was close enough.

by the way, that sucks. i'm sure they will send you another piece.

 

Just how much did you hammer it?

I've installed three Addco RSBs on 5th gens and not one of them had the bracket fall off on me. Next time you hammer it, don't hammer it so hard and so much! A little at a time!

 

I didn't have to hammer it. I installed it by sliding it on from the back toward the front. The width is slightly less toward the back for the trailing arm, and as you slide it forward, it'll get tighter at around where the bolt holding the parking brake cable is at. You have to take the bolt off temporarily to make installation easier. Plus I had the wheels off after spending an hours under the car with jacks at first. The threads on the bracket if you look may be slightly larger in diameter than the bracket itself from the metal getting cut/formed into threads. That's why sliding it on from the back toward the front works I think because it did get stuck on me when I tried to just put it on toward where it should go. As for the Stillen on using alluminum brackets, and two pieces, may be one reason why it cost more, looks better, easier to install and more adjustment options.

 

Actually, the side that broke i didnt' hammer at all, but even if, it would break at the angle and not 1/4 inch from the end where the thread is.

I had the same problem with my RSB but instead of hammering the hell out of it to make it fit, I spent 5 minutes to make a much better "outside" bracket out of plate steel and some hardened bolts. It is very easy to do if you have any sort of metal cutting device as well as a decent drill. You can use the flat brackets that came with the kit as a template.

 

What exactly do you mean? what did you do? did you make new plates or bolts???

 

That's what it sounds like to me, he used the flat rectangular plates that came with the kit and made new plates and used bolts and nuts to attach it. Two straight bolts that is. That's why he said you would need good metal cutting devices... It has to be a thick piece of metal

 

No bro, not just the 5th gens. i just installed mine on a 97' and it was a real biotch! I couldn't believe how much persuasion they took. I don't know why they just didnt give you a little more room on the bolts and plates!?!?
Glad to hear I was'nt the only one. Still a good mod - could just fit better!

 

I spoke to Addco today, about the problem, and their technician supposed to call me tomorrow, so i'll tell him to make a bigger brackets together with the flat plates. Hope they do it.

and yeah, banging on a product to fit does seem a bit shady to me too.

 

Young has the correct idea, I used the plates that came with the kit as a template to make two more (one for each side) then I used two bolts (that I purchased from the store, as it is very difficult to make your own ) The plates where very easy to make, I used a Air-powered Die-grinder to do the cutting and a standard drill to make the holes. One thing you want to make sure you get are Grade 5 or higher bolts (hardened) I used grade 8 which is the highest you are going to find at any regular hardware or automotive store. You can tell the grade by the little bars on the top of the head 3 bars for grade 5 etc etc.... Softer bolts will snap under the pressure of you car torquing against it. Good Luck

This is the same thing that happened to me last night. I attempted to install mine all by myself. Them damn bolts for the trailing arm would not fit What is up with that? You would think that Addco would notice this and modify the hardware they send out. I was almost done with the mod then wound up aborting the whole thing cuz I got so ****ed. Initially I thought they sent me the wrong part but at least now I know I'm not alone.

Honestly, I cannot see how these bolts will fit without banging em in. THEKNITE, can you keep us posted on what Addco has to say about this?

 

The guy said that he had a complaint about it before, so he knows i'm not making this up, and that he has what i need, and told me he'll send me two bigger square U bolts, so i told him i also need a nut, and 2 flat plates just in case. He said ok. So i'll let you guys know when i get them and try them on.

Thanks for your help. I just spoke to Dan Osborn from Addco who was real helpful. He said he got at least 10 calls this week about this. They are making new bolts and sending them out to the ones who called. Guess the instalation is gonna have to wait

 

I had the same problem with mine too. The U Bolts didn't go aorund the trailing arm correctly, I had to hammer them a little too. Even if they do send out new ones, I don't know if I want to go through the trouble again, since it seems to be working fine.

 

Until the already weakly designed and now bent Ubolts snap. Causing your sway to drop and drag on the pavement. In which case you will be ---->

 

Tru, I did mention that I might try to lightly bang them on and he said don't do it. Doing that may just weaken the bolt. It may not seem so now but I'd rather wait and be safe then be sorry.

 

I called up Addco at 1-800-338-7015 and spoke to someone (forgot his name) on ext. 107 and told him that the brackets didn't fit. He said that he would send new ones as soon as they were made up.

 

what about to all of us that have them on?? should i give them a ring and maybe they could send me some new ones.

Have any of you guys received the modified U bolt yet? Last time I spoke to the was on the 1st and they said that they would 2 day air it to me. Well it's been 9 days and still no U bolts. I just left them a message requesting an update. Just wondering if you guys got your bolts. I'm about to sell this thing to a 4th Gen owner

It's been 2 weeks, since i requested the u bolts, and called them two days ago, and the guy said they were made, finished, and ready so they'll ship it out tomorrow. Bunch of BS, but as long as i'll get it soon, it's ok.
