get the y-pipe for sure... that will get you the most gains... everything else is secondary in terms of exhaust..

Where can I get a resonable priced Ypipe? I was thinking of getting that or the Straight pipe. But someone said that a Ypipe and a Straight pipe is not good since it messes up the ECU or something. If I dont end up getting a Ypipe, you know anywhere in the DC area where I can get a good straight pipe? for less than $80?

I think you have a few things mixed up. The y-pipe is the pipe that goes from the exhaust manifolds back to the cat. Stillen and Cattman are the two companies that currently make y-pipes for the 5th gen. I think Warpspeed is also going to start making y-pipes for the 5th gen. The cheapest y-pipe would be Warpspeeds most likely, while the Cattman pipe is the most expensive at $400. Most of the gains you will see are from the y-pipe. A straight pipe is used to replace your catalytic converter. You have cali spec emissions, so you can actually get away with a straight pipe and y-pipe, given that you don't touch the front pre-cat that is built into the front exhaust manifold. You have no O2 sensors behind the main cat. However, I would say get an aftermarket high-flow cat rather than a straight pipe. Anyhow, before anything, you should get a y-pipe first when modding the exhaust. You will not see any gains from a straight pipe or high-flow cat alone.

Damn that means I am getting conflicting info from other people. They say that a straight pipe will give you a nice boost in the top end and will increase the gas mileage.

Secondly I dont understand this CALI-SPEC stuff...... what you mean by that? You saying that my car has a california specifications for emissions? Is that good or bad for performance?

Now a Ypipe and a high flow cat will bring some major gains correct? How much estimated for a highflow cat? is this the one made by Random?

Man I still need to meet up with you and check you joint out and what not, i keep forgetting.

well, a straight pipe may give you some top-end power, but really though, running without a cat is bad. By cali-spec, yes, it means that you have California Spec/NLEV emission. Basically it means that you have 4 O2 sensors in the exhaust path, a pre-cat built into the front exhaust manifold, plus some extra hardware in the intake manifold. This isn't good for performance, but the difference should not be huge when compared to fed-spec maximas. A y-pipe and hi-flow cat will get you some nice gains. Random Tech makes these hi-flow cats.

If you want to meet up, just let me know. Drop me an e-mail: nauman6@yahoo.com ... later....

Will this pass inspection in NJ? Ours is much like the CA inspection for emissions. According to cattman the new Y pipe will take out the "pre-cats" and is not street legal (for offroad use only). You mentioned that the pre-cats are in the manifold... I'm a little confused (nothing new).

Anyone in Jersey pass inspection with this mod? How hard would it be to switch back to the old pipes every other year (how hard is the mod)? Also...how much power increase (HP/Torque) can you expect out of this mod alone (I have a 2k and cattman only give the dyno's for a 96 max).

Thanks,
Paul

if you have your main cat still there, or an RT cat, you should pass emissions just fine as long as the car is warmed up. Precats only do their job when the car is cold. All bets are off with a straight pipe though.... thats why you should probably just go with a hi-flow cat or the stock cat even....

Re: Re: Re: cpmplete y / b pipe install

I was really wondering about the B-pipe more than anything. The y-pipe really helped me out. I put my car up on the hoist at work and finally noticed the crimp in the exhaust just after the resonator. What the hell is that? Come on....that can't be good for airflow. Put a circular rubber mount there and make it better nissan. Does anybody know if the B-pipe does much for HP?
