question for anyone with "yellowstars" or comparable

Just curious how "yellow" the actual bulb is... not the light output (seen that before), but the actual color of the bulb (unlit)... I really don't want to paint the reflector, but I'm searching for a way to get as "yellow" light from the stock fog housing as possible.... i know this has been discussed before.. I couldn't find what I was looking for on the search... sorry... Any replies are appreciated..
Thanks,
Randy

I have the Hella Yellowstars 85 watt version. The 95 Max's factory fogs are rated for 55 watts. SO far I haven't had a problem, but I haven't gone through winter yet. I hope the glass doesn't crack from the hot bulb and the cold outside air.
Aside from all that, the bulb is kinda yellow/purplish - sorta like those ion lenses on other fogs. The bulbs look yellow when lit and do project a yellow light. I was hoping for something like Lexus' yellow but haven't had any luck. I do like my Yellowstars. Good luck.

thanks toolrock... didn't realize that the Yellowstars had a "so-to-say" ionic glare on them... hmmmm..... yeah, I had heard that about them... they look yellow up close when lit, but NOT anywhere near the yellow intensity of the Lexus Yellow... thanks for the post... I'm brainstorming on how to get that look w/o major modification, or at least somewhere near it... as i don't think my BV's will go that well with the HIDs...
Thanks!

the yellowstars i had looked just the lights on the lex gs400.
pure, bright yellow light...
the problem is about a year ago they stopped making them.
they were made in europe and the gov. over there banned them.
the cars used to require yellow lights but something happened and they were banned... so to keep dealers happy they had another company make then, but not with the same quality. also the chemical used is badd for the earth or something. so now the new yellowstars look whitish. the bulb has a slight yellow tint. the old ones were dark yellow.. i have one real yellowstar left.

Hey Randy,

I had the yellow stars last winter in 85w version. That was too much in my opinion. The glass would get HOT and I do belive thats what cracked mine...not chips/stones. I'd say get 55w whatever you do....although you have plastic lenses so I dunno. As far as the yellow....it was NOT lexus yellow. The ionic description above is dead on. They were bright. If I turned on my car with head/fogs on and walked up the block it looked just like white fogs. Up close and esp. on pure white snow it was yellow...but the edge had a purple hue to it.

The key to both the lexus and Infinit QX4(which should be researched more) is a piece that goes inside the lense. The QX4 has the exact same yellow as the lexus.

Here is what I would do. Get that plastic/glass paint and paint the fogs yellow. On the 4th gen like yours the fog is recessed in the bumper so you wouldn't really notice it. Mine is kinda out there. See if the light is yellow enough for you. If not...go get a set of hella's...either 55 or 85 and that should be more than plenty of yellow light.

Mike S.

ps- I'm thinking of Raybrig's Metal white or white thunder for my fogs for the winter.....BUT at over 100 for a set....its not a priority.

I had the 85W Yellow Stars. Yep, they cracked one of my fog lights. Get the 55W version. But as far as light and color go, they are a purple color and the light is slightly yellow up close but from a distance they are a brighter, more intense yellow.

Don't get the bulbs in the 55W version, they barely have any yellow output and they don't last long. I can attest to toolrocks lights, his are seriously yellow and they are bright. But on the flip side you are risking the cracking of the lenses with the internal heat and the external cold, not a good mixture...

In my personal experience, I went back to the factory bulbs and may eventually go to PIAAs or something else.

Best of luck!!!!

I just wanted to comment on Wicked's statement. I bought my yellowstars about 6 months ago so I would assume I have the 'newer' bulbs. I've all ready explained what they look like unlit. I will add that I think they look great, and are trully a nice yellow but I think the Lexus' have a richer, deeper shade of yellow - almost orangey.
Not trying to add fuel to the fire. I would like to know if you get the results you want, and if so - how. Thanks.
I want that nice Lexus' look too, but want to find it in a bulb - not painting lenses, reflectors or anything. Good luck and please keep us posted.

I've been on this quest too

I had ions when I first got my car in 97 but they blew fast. I bought 20 sets of standard H3 bulbs on eBay for $10 and not one has blown since I've put them in back in 98. Has anyone tried to paint the bulb or housing yet? In my opinion, cmcknite's looks great. Also, if you guys have amber bulbs in your blinkers, you can paint them with a transparent silver paint. I used a $3 at Home Depot, but guido_sst just did it with transparent acrylic paint from an art supply store and said it works better.

What does painting the amber bulb do and will the paint handle the heat over time? Thanks

Painting the amber will make the lense look clear during the daytime or when your blinkers are not activated. But when you activate the signals, the amber will shine right through the sliver coating. Polarg sells a bulbs just like these for $20/bulb and they're out of stock everywhere. go to:

you can do the same thing for the clear tail lights too.

well i like yellow but it was better in europe when the actual lens was yellow, i have PIAA plasma's H3 the japanese ones, they are extremely bright and emit a bluish/white/purple, its an amazing spectrum and they are much MUCH brighter then my headlights i think they emit the best light.
