Motor trend has the following #'s for a 96 sho{same as 98 I presume}

0-60= 7.5
1/4= 15.7 @ 88.6 mph

Thats not all that fast

Sad thing is it is probbaly quicker then a intake equiped 98 I30 Auto.
0-60 approx. 7.8
1/4 approx 16.1 @ 83-86 mph.

My friend has a 97 SHO. and we have raced twice.....he's got a cold air intake and custom exhaust (read pipes etc).

My signature reads as follows...

we are pretty even all the way till about 80mph...then my car suddenly jumps in front of his and I'm about 3/4 car length (he's in my blind spot...and I'm guesstimating that his front bumper is at my rear bumper) ahead of him...

if thats a kill...then its a kill...but to me...its just barely edging him out.

btw, both of us are autos.

the way I do it, is to turn off my TCS (traction control...otherwise the car bogs) button (on 99s and up I think?)...put the car in 1 and sequentially shift at around 6000rpm or so.

I raced a 90's sho last summer. I was afraid at first cuz I thought they were really fast (cuz of Cheston's faq on car racing) but I got him bad off the line and he was gone before 1st redlined.
I was surprised then looked up stats on it.... it's not that fast
at least compared to a 5spd max

The last-gen V8 SHOs weren't that fast...

I can't figure it out. It's hard for a car to be that slow with an aluminum 3.5L DOHC 40 valve V8. That's pretty much what an F355 has, and it was a barnstormer of an engine. IMHO, Ford didn't get their tuning straight the first time and gave up on the SHO before they could do it right. That engine should have been making at least 250hp, rather than only 235.

Well, the 3.4L DOCH all aluminum 32 Valve SHO V8 engine is something ford did not do alot with. If they could have tuned it right, like you said around 250 HP which is capable of, and mated that with a nice 5/6 spd. They would be something. But Ford must learn from Nissan how to build/market their Sport Sedans, which they havent.

Just curious what a Maxima would run, since Ive heard a few people talking about them stomping on the early 5pd years SHOs.

BTW, the new Maximas look awesome, and the drivetrain is wicked... Wish I could afford one!

yeah, at that time i had a hot air intake and idle problem(which at the track i was running 16.2 off bottle), we re-raced after i made a custom cold airintake and i beat him pretty much the same way he beat me the first time. then we did one with my Zex(N2O) on and i beat him by 2 car lengths. Now with the problems fixed i'm back in the mid 15's and low looow 14's with the Juice on. I don't think he's gonna catch me anytime soon.

Do you happen to live in Winnipeg? I was just wondering because there is a black ~1991 Taurus SHO with "SHO OFF" on his plates. If it's you, you have a fast car. I saw you run against those GTP's that run between 14.0 - 14.9, down at route 90.

Yup thats me... the SHO with the yellow yettering... Got my Ypipe and NOS on order... should be here end of this week... 7-11 HP at the wheels for pipe and 55-75 shot ZEX kit... although with season ending wont be able to run it this year... hoping for mid-high 13s on properly tuned car with bottle on... mid 14s N/A...

I think the early ones, like 92-95 5spds are pretty quick. Two of my borther's friends have them, not a bad car. But the re-sale value is really bad on that car and the tranny breaks after a short while.

Hello all.

I took a look at this from the V8SHO e mail list and I liked your board. I also am a former Z car owner/club member. I'm a big fan of the Maxima and would love to get my hands on a six speed '02 sometime soon.

BUT..I do drive a 96 SHO, and I have gone up against a '99 Maxima automatic with a Stillen Intake. He ( my buddy ) won once, I won twice. After I did the muffs and the intake, I took him from a standing start and from 50 mph roll. He lost more from the roll than from the start, but by 90 mph from the start he was two cars back.

I'm sure I'd get smoked by a manual, but these SHO's are fun cars to drive. And as someone mentioned above, the V8 SHO could have and should have been done better.

When it comes to 4 door performance at an affordable price, I don't think there are many ways to go besides Nissan at the moment ( speaking of new ) but with the market being as soft as it is on these Tauruses, you really can't beat 'em for cheap, 4 door fun.

Hey
as one of your brother's friends (the ever famous and noteworthy mitch33x), I don't know why you think my tranny breaks quickly. Maybe I am not your brother's friend after all? lol
The tranny holds up fine. If you abuse it, you will lose it. (that sounded cool) That's true of any car.
BTW, the 89-91's are lighter than the 92-95's. If you look at Kevin's trap speeds compared to mine, (91 SHO vs. 93), you can see that he has a few more mph on me. The fact that I prob weigh a lot more than he does might have something to do with that too. Plus I suck at drag racing. ehhh..I'm not gonna say that one car is better than the other. I'd gladly steal your brother's Max, but he knows where I live and he might see it here. Likewise, I also love my SHO; both are great cars. As anyone here who drives a stick will attest to, a 5 speed FWD car is hard to launch. If a stock Max ever trounced a stock SHO or vice versa, I'd blame it on driver error; both cars are very similar as far as 1/4 mile times and trap speeds..

Ian, you are right. I don't know I heard that somewhere that the SHO trannys are weak, but I can't atest to that since I don't have one, but since you do, I believe you.

I would be more afraid of the Pre 96's. Some of those newer 96+ SHOs are hooked up though. Stock they tend to run in the high 15's, same as the automatic Maximas.

No way am I racing Ian.

Dunno, but I just keyed up a black contour SVT that was in my parking spot in my driveway. It looked a LOT like the guy's car who lives above me.
