REMOVAL of chrome roof strips

Long story short, I might be getting these under warranty, but I also figured out how to take these things out, thanks to my Nissan tech.

First you pop the trunk and there is ONE screw for each side that holds the rear plastic/chrome piece on. Once you take that screw out, you can carefully pop that one piece out.

That's how it looks removed.

Now in the front you take off the black plastic thing by the windshield

Now you can carefully push on the entire assembly towards the back of the car. The thing "slips" into place, so that is how you take it out as well. When you put it back in, you can just line all of the slots up and "pop" them in.

This is how it looks with them both off.

I think this would be useful for those thinking about getting these painted.

Post pics when you get that done. I may paint mine or get black or red overlays.

Would the paint even "stick" to this material? I mean, if you sand it down, but WILL it stick and not crack while the thing wobbles and flexes while you try to put it back in?

I was thinking like a pure silver would look and contrast pretty well on the smoke colored style. If this doesn't get covered under warranty, then I think I may just get these painted.

Make sure you don't crack your windshield. Some of us had them replaced at the dealer and the windshield cracked.. the dealer replaced the windshield at their cost. You break it- you buy it!

I can say this happend...they replaced them under warranty...I went to get my car and noticed the crack...they didn't even tell me. Before I left the dealership I let them know about the cracked windshield. They fixed that and replaced again, the chrome strips they installed poorly. BTW the strips from the front of the car to the top of the rear window...are cheap. The ones from the top of the rear window down to the bottom of the rear window appear to be good quality...no prob with them.

Thats why I may get overlays. If I want to I can remove them so no need to sand down and wreck em.

When I told my tech about some people having their windshield cracked in the process, he thought I was retarded! lol And when I took these off myself, I thought the same because you have to be extremely retarded to crack your windshield...all you do is carefully slide the thing towards the rear and bam, it's out! Only way that I could think of to damage the windshield is by trying to PRY the strips off, thus cracking the glass in the process.

I heard that its extremely common for Nissan to crack the windshield when they replace these strips. Why is that? And is it safer for us to do it the way you mentioned above?

Same thing with mine. The ones on the roof are all tarnished, but the ones that run on the back window side look fine.

Deus...Life sucks right now...I transferred to Fort Sam Houston...came down by myself since my house in Colorado has not sold. So the Family is back there and I'm in a crappy extended stay hotel. It's hard when you have a 2 year old and a 5 year old...they don't understand...and probably, mainly my 5 year old, thinking I'm back in Iraq.

Can't wait to sell the house and then I'll go back, have the mover's pack the house and reunite with the family...

Hey you all...

You know...I have not seen one Maxima without problems on these cromed strips...or should I say plastic strips. I would think this would be a recall issue or something with Nissan. Granted, I'm lucky, I have a long warranty, and I'm trying my best to keep them in shape, i.e., putting car wax on them and such. But if they fade again, I'll be back to get them replaced under my warranty. This has to be costing them some $$$'s ya know?

Really wonder about quality these days...seems to be a problem all around...

Well I have had zero issues with my chrome strips since I purchased my 04 Max back in July 2003. To this day my chrome still shines like new. Other then that, after 24 years in the military (retired in 2004), I feel your pain on the move and hope everything works out soon for you and your family. God Speed...

Anyone know if these chrome strips might covered under my Gold Preferred extended warranty? Anyone have a part number for these strips? I cant even figure out what category these strips are in when I look on the online parts websites.

I had the strip replaced the same week I bought the car. The chrome is still shiny (only a liitle less than the back pieces), after more than 3 yrs. But now the chrome is peeling and I found something interesting. The chrome is a thin stick-on film. I peek under it and the piece is black and the surface looks decent. So I may peel off the chrome film soon (when it gets bad enough) to see. I will find out if I even need to paint them. I would rather put on new chrome strips then.

I just had mine replaced about 4 months ago and they faded again. I wonder if the roof strips are different from the rear strips.

I have an '04 SE, 4 years old and <33K miles.

Only the right side has the "overlay" peeling off. The left side is as good as new.

Very annoying. I could probably get by if there was a way to "glue" down the edges that are peeling. Has anybody tried this?

These roof strips are as bad as the lame plastic "tooth" grille finish peeling off. I was lucky enough to have the whole grille replaced while still under warranty. Nissan should step up and replace these poorly designed parts even out of warranty.

Well, there are overlays for headlights, tail lights, and other car parts, why not make overlays for the chrome strips. Id love to see mine in red or black.

That's exactly my situation. Today I bent a paperclip and plan to put some glue in there to buy some time. And all my vailable crazyglues are hard solid (wasted). Will try some other time.

Mine just turned bad after nearly three years and 40,000 miles. Parts are on order. My service guy suspects that if the protective shipping tape is not removed, the tape may be baking onto the strips and then turning cloudy. I think he might be right in my case.

40Kmiles, I guess you have to pay the it. Can you post the part# and cost ? I'm planning to remove the right strip and apply some superglue this weekend (some peelings). Just hope it's easy enough. Worst case, I have to buy new ones.

Just not my luck, today

History: I had the chrome strips replaced right after taking delivery, 3.5yrs ago. Last week I follow the instruction here trying to remove the passenger-side strip (to apply glue on some peelings). I didnot succeed, so I plan try again later. I didnot use any tools whatsoever, just my fingers trying to push the piece back. Today, it was fine at lunch break. But I saw a 2 foot long crack (started from under the strip) when I left work.
I think I only used reasonable forces to push it back, not down on it. So now I can understand how the dealer could break one' windshield just by breathing on the strip.
Now I plan to goto a 3rd party to replace the glass. I wonder if they know how to remove the strips to get to the glass. At least I can tell them leave the peeling strip off for me.
Just not my lucky day. Just found out all my OEM rotors are cracked too. This Maxi really costs me much pain and $$$.

updates

Just had the windshield replaced, $150+tax out the door. I didnot see any difference between the OEM and the replacement. The guy popped the chrome trims in one minute, using a small flat-head screwdriver (with tape wrapped around, to pretect the paint). He must have done it a thoudsand times. I tried to apply superglue to the peeling area, but it didnot work so don't bother try that. I will stop by the dealer to get a new piece and will update the part# and cost. It looks so easy now. I told the guy how to push it back. He just laughed and popped it right out.

they all suspect something like that. but it's because they are plastic and fade in the sun. have my 3rd set. all faded quickly. all new cars on the lot are faded. it they used all chrome or all plastic, we would never know. the rear window ones are chrome.
